The museum is right across the street from the prison entrance and is about as close to the walls as they will allow. It isn’t very big but is packed with prison history and exhibits. Be sure and take the time to watch the video as it really explains how Folsom was built. There is a section on Johnny Cash and that appears to be the main thing that attracts visitors. After the turn off onto the prison road watch for wildlife, we saw a lot of wild turkey and deer including a small fawn. Some reviews talk about dress codes and no photography but that is for people wanting to visit the inmates and does not apply to the museum.

I have lived in Folsom for about 14 years. I'm not normally big on museums, but I had family coming in from the East Coast and they all said that they really wanted to go to the Folsom Prison Museum. It's located right in town but situated in a way that you'd never see the prison except for a couple of vantage points on the nearby American River Bike Trail (which is truly a gem of this region).

We visited the small prison museum and found it very interesting, actually. The docents were friendly and informative. It truly is small, so you can make it through in as little as 20-30 minutes, or you can take your time and delve into more detailed reviews of artifacts. We ended up spending about an hour there.

There is a new "Johnny Cash Art Trail" that is being built over the next several years. It is adjacent to the prison and will feature 6 or 7 Johnny Cash-themed sculpture. I've seen the artist's renderings and they all look really cool. If you have time, plan to take a walk on the trail to see if any of the sculptures are complete. It will lead you to Folsom Lake, so you'd have an opportunity to check that out too.

Enjoy!

Was in Sacramento for work and was looking for something to do. Id heard about this museum through Trip Advisor and decided to check it out.
It's an awesome museum full of History and Artifacts from the prison over time. It was very insightful and interesting to see some of the incredible things the prisoners have made over time. I saw they planned on building a new museum, but this location is very interesting right outside the gate to the prison and you actually have to pass by some Guards to access the Museum. The lady who was working was very helpful and answered any questions I had. I highly recommend checking out this museum. Even have one room dedicated to Johnny Cash's visit to Folsom. Watch the 20 min. video, it's very insightful.
