Bit of a let down
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Aug 2019via mobile
We recently stayed at the Saletoga Sands Resort for 7 nights were a little disappointed. I really wanted to like this place but I’m afraid it fell a little short on some things. First off the staff are lovely and helpful, particularly Janet in reception who was very helpful getting us set up with a Samoan SIM card and giving us info about getting a resort car. The resort cars are really good and it was great to head away from the resort to see the beauty of Samoa. The resort itself doesn’t really look anything like the advertised pictures, I think they may have edited them a bit too much. It is a pretty large resort and it is over run by noisy children. Certainly wouldn’t recommend if you want a peaceful holiday environment. There is no free wifi anywhere in the hotel so you will have to pay for wifi or buy a SIM card. There is no phone in the rooms. The tv only works for dvds, which they have some old ones in reception. On two different days we had put the do not disturb sign on our door as we were both ill and on both days the staff still banged on the door about room cleaning. On one of the days they actually banged on two seperate occasions, despite the sign being on. Probably the biggest let down was the food. The continental breakfast is average, there was only 3 choices of cereal and lots of high calorie sugary pastries. There is a menu you can order from for a high price. The dinner food was just not up to standard at all. It was actually pretty poor quality. The only safe options to order are really the pizzas but even at that, it was hit and miss. Don’t even try and alter any of your order cause it seems to just get lost in translation somewhere. They also just bring all the food together, like starters and main courses, despite being asked not to. Also we attended the fia fia night on the Wednesday and had to book our table to ensure we got a space. When we arrived we were sat at a table with another couple. Although the other couple were very friendly, I think we should have been notified prior to sitting down that we wouldn’t be on our own. We were on holiday and wanted to time to sit and chill on our own not make small talk with people we didn’t know. Overall it just wasn’t really worth the money. It’s advertised as a 4 star hotel but it certainly doesn’t live up to that. There’s lots of other hotels nearby that appear to have better quality and standard.

We stayed at the Saletoga Sands hotel in February 2016 and had such an incredible time. The staff were wonderful, and the Fijian chef at the hotel restaurant cooked the best food I've ever had in my life. Hopefully he still works there! I recommend the Chicken and Prawn Chilli Caramel - it is to die for! The hotel is on the southern side of the island, right on the coast line and the beach there has beautiful tropical fish and coral, making for a great snorkelling experience. There is also a canopy type thing over the water that would make for a great place for a wedding. The only down side is that the hotel is located about 1.5 hr drive from Apia, and taxi's won't drive out that far from town so renting a car is a MUST. The hotel rents out Toyota Rav 4's which is quite useful. If you stay there, make sure to book a trip to Tu Sua Ocean Trench and best to do it with a guide so they can take you to where the locals go also. Oh and, bring tropical strength mosquito repellant - you're gonna need it.

Talofa lava,

Thank you for the special mention for Netesh! We will surely pass the message on to him!

What a great review, we are so happy you enjoyed your stay here.

You are so right it is a bit of a drive from the main town Apia! The taxis will drop from Apia to Saletoga. Though to save any hassle we can organise transfers for you.

Renting a car from the resort is great option to give you the freedom to adventure around the island at your own pace.

Kind Regards,

Talofa :)

A group of friends decided to tick Samoa off our bucket list and decided on Saletoga Sands Resort for our choice of hotel. We couldn’t have been happier with the choice.

The staff are nothing short of amazing, the tours available through the resort capture the highlights of the island, the transfers worked like clockwork , the meals were delicious and the room was clean, comfortable and gorgeous.

Car hire is available through the resort if you decide you want to do your own sightseeing however the tours through the resort are a better option in my opinion.

If you are travelling to Samoa you will love this relaxing resort.

Special mention to Taryn (The Manager) who looked after one of our friends after she injured herself quite badly (no fault of the resort - just saying lol ). Taryn and her team of staff went the extra mile to help her during her stay and even sent an extra staff member to the airport to help her with the transfer. We couldn’t have asked for better treatment.

Also special mention to my favourite team member Tana who was also just amazing throughout our stay. Please say hi from me if you’re heading over there.

The weather in august was perfect- nice and warm for swimming, sightseeing etc. A few showers of rain that didn’t last long to cool things down a little. Loved it.

We stayed here on our honeymoon with a 2 yr old.

Perfect for families, great big clean pool, food was slightly overpriced but decent, well maintained grounds, big clean rooms, kids club was great, babysitting service was great but make sure you pay babysitter directly as the hotel takes a huge cut of their pay otherwise, please tip the babysitters as they really don’t earn much after hotel takes its cut, massage in day spa was excellent, snorkeling was fairly good, lots to do filling in the days.
Breakfast could of been better for the amount you pay. Only continental breakfast.

This hotel is NZ owned and you will notice the difference in service.
Very happy, would highly recommend to families.

Talofa,

Thank you for your review. I think you may have got the wrong information about the babysitter. We take pride in looking after our staff here at Saletoga Sands as we are like a big family! As communication can be a break down at times, please don't hesitate to ask the office management team for any outstanding questions or concerns you may have.

Our breakfast for most people is more than enough. We offer a selection of fresh seasonal fruits, cereals, 5 different types of breads, fresh baked savory and sweet options cooked on the day daily. Tea, coffee, juice, milk and water.

We are so happy you enjoyed your Spa experience. Fia, Amy, Velonkia and Selai do a really great job!

We thank you for your kind words and we do hope to see you back in the future!

As our first trip to Samoa, we we're a couple and 2 adult kids, we we're looking for an all round resort. Quiet Sandy beaches leading into warm water. Pool with a swim up bar, choices of restaurants.
It almost hit the on everything.
The good things and recommendations first.
The cabins are amazing, huge, modern, cool (A/C), and the outdoor shower was just brilliant. Never want to shower indoors again. Get a cabin on the waterfront if you want but we had 109 & 110, just one step back from the water and on a private path. 109 still had a view to the water and was centrally located for everything.
The staff are amazing. Locals who have been locally trained. You feel very much a part of their family.
The swimming and snorkling are fantastic. The water is warm and clear with heaps of fish to see and reefs to explore.
The resort has a number of hire cars, so just grab one for the day to explore the sights. Good quality newish cars.
Everything is very clean and maintained.
For the not so good things, and there weren't many.
The photos on the website are very old. The beach does not look anything like that. If you are looking for that stroll across white sand and walk into the water, sorry but the storms have washed that away years ago.
Whilst the staff are great they are not internationally trained, but they get there eventually.
The pool bar needs a rethink. Little stock on hand and no one really knows how to handle that type of service. A lot of people left thirsty.
Great resort for 4-5 days.
