“Beauty and Serenity in Southern Sri Lanka”

I've previously been to Galle and stayed at a charming old hotel in the fort. In booking Handugoda Lodge for my next trip to this magnificent country, I was looking for a more relaxing experience outside of the touristy confines of the city. Our stay at Handugoda exceeded all expectations.

The lodge is located near Talpe amidst the stunning greenery of rice paddies and forest. That said, it is only about a 15 minute tuk-tuk ride (readily available and relatively inexpensive) from Unawatuna or Dellawala beaches and about 20 minutes from Galle. The area is lush and beautiful, with a stunning variety of resident animals, including spectacular peacocks. What a joy to wake up and see these magnificent birds!

The house itself is all you can ask for in a villa. The large open porch, where we dined, also has a cozy sitting area and kept us dry during the occasional rain (and when it rains, it pours). All the french doors on the front of the house open widely to let the breezes circulate through the house. All rooms and the porch have ceiling fans, which together kept us quite comfortable despite the heat. The rooms are all open and airy, and the beds are quite comfortable.

Perhaps the best part - the one which allows you to kick back and not have a care in the world - is the housekeeper Mala. The house is spotless and Mala arrives each morning so that you can greet the day with her amazing breakfast. She is available to cook other meals as you wish, which she did for us. My friend is interested in cooking, and Mala happily let her in on the secrets of Sri Lankan cuisine. If nothing else, you will not leave hungry!

So, if you are looking for peace and quiet amidst the stunning scenery of rural Sri Lanka, Handugoda lodge is the place for you. We will be back again!

“Privacy, relaxation and charm”

My husband and I booked 7 nights in this charming house which was as welcoming as it could be. From booking to arrival and during our stay we could not have wished for more.

Ideally designed for maximum privacy and relaxation with everything one needs to simply enjoy the nature and stillness of the surroundings, Handugoda Lodge was as comfortable as it was aesthetically pleasing. The house flows so well with both bedrooms opening up onto the outside living space next to the pool so it was difficult not to rise early and to open up the whole space to the mist over the paddy fields and the awakening nature for morning tea and coffee on the deck - not to forget the magnificent peacocks who greeted us like clockwork, nor the parrots, chipmunks and monkeys who made their presence known.

Our only challenge was to wrench ourselves away from our relative seclusion for outings and we certainly were relieved and happy to get 'home' after venturing out to the surrounding areas including Unawatuna and Galle (easy rides with reliable Asoka as tuc-tuc driver).

The housekeeper is really accommodating, attentive (as much as you need her to be) and cooks beautiful authentic food on order with love and care. We decided to have lunch everyday and mostly ate the left-overs at night. We’d recommend a pizza and beer at Wijaya Beach, a funky little bar/hotel directly on a very clean beach where we enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

We’d recommend Hundugoda Lodge without reservation and, should we ever return to Sri Lanka, would love to revisit.

“The Wonders of Nature Captured For You”
Reviewed 8 December 2016 for a stay in December 2016

Handugoda Lodge is one of those places that become implanted in your memory for ever and ever . . . the kind of place where, not only each hour or day, but each moment carries with it a sense of peace, serenity, and an at-oneness with nature. Located in the rice paddies outside of Galle and raised a bit from the flatness of the terrain, Handugoda Lodge offers a breathtaking view of Sri Lanka's finest greenery, flora and fauna.

We had our resident lizard, frog, peacock, monkey, chipmunk, many birds -- at our doorstep. You would think, "oh, no, not for me". Don't. Handugoda Lodge immediately instills a sense of partnership with everything around you. And what a glorious feeling that is. One that has been very rare on our vacations and one that lasts a lifetime.

You can arrange to be picked up from the Colombo airport and driven to the lodge. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive, and, of course, a return as well. The daily rate includes daily maid and housekeeping services and a call ahead with requests will garner you just about anything you want in the fridge upon your arrival. Our housekeeper, Mala, made dinner for us one evening -- by far the best Sri Lankan food we've ever had. She also prepared scrumptious breakfasts and would have made lunches, too, but we were quite satiated with the breakfasts. While bottled water is included, food and extras are at your cost. Galle town and the beaches are a quick 15 to 20 min tuk-tuk ride away.

When you open the doors of the master bedroom in the morning and look out across the in-ground pool onto the rice paddies of Sri Lanka, see the peacocks in full tail display, drink in the Sri Lankan air, and realize your body and mind are in a state of peace, you too will be forever changed. Yes, the wonders of nature captured just for you.

This is a lovely little gem of a place tucked away in the rice fields of Talpe. If you are looking for a nice quite retreat away from the town, then this would be an ideal place for you. We stayed four nights for a long weekend getaway, and thoroughly enjoyed our time here. There are a number of trails to explore, and only 10 minutes to Unawatuna by Tuk Tuk. They have a lovely housekeeper (Mala) who is great with kids, an amazing cook, and very helpful. Would recommend for anyone looking for a quite retreat.

“Handugoda Lodge is paradise and relaxation hidden in the Sri Lankan jungle”
Reviewed 17 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

If your looking for escapism and total relaxation Handugoda Lodge is where you will find it. Beautifully situated in the middle of know where, but actually only 15mins tuk tuk ride to the sandy beaches, this really is a stunning house to stay.
Simplicity and comfort in all the rooms and the kitchen living area opens out onto the beautiful garden with pool and eating areas.
You can see and hear the peacocks and moneys in the trees and when nighttime falls the sky if filled with the sparkling lights from the fireflies that are all around.
We can't wait for our next visit.
