Goha Hotel Gondar Ethiopia

Review of Goha Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 May 2015
This hotel has changed ownership in the last few years and is much better than it used to be. It is situated on the top of a hill with a good view over the town of Gondar and ancient city in the North of Ethiopia which is one of the important towns historically in Ethiopian history. The rooms are clean tidy and quiet. The bathrooms and showers are in good working order which cannot be assumed in all hotels in Ethiopia. The food is fine if you are not looking for something really classy. The servings were not the biggest. The reception is friendly and the staff helpful. There is a swimming pool which is well presented and maintained. The road up to the hotel is not the greatest but there are lots of taxis ready to transport you there from the airport (about 20-30 minutes from town). You wouldn't want to walk up the hill to get there unless you are a health freak. There is no wifi in the rooms but there is in the lounge and on the terrace. The hotel rooms cost about $66US for a couple.
Date of stay: April 2015
Room Tip: The views from the rooms are not the greatest because of the undergrowth outside the windows

Well appointed rooms with facilities that worked, wifi in reception and restaurant with reasonable enough food (ate there in the evening). Very helpful staff, who can order a tuk tuk or taxi for you to take you down the hill to town, or pre arrange an airport pickup. Hotel ticked all our boxes for our short stay in town.

Perhaps the best thing about this hilltop hotel are the spectacular views across the valley and the town of Gondor. The terrace was a nice place for sundowners. Formerly state-owned, the hotel is now in private hands. An effort has been made to bring it up to international standard. Food was simple but fine; service was generally good. The wi-fi didn't work, though - ostensibly because of a problem with the transmitter in town.

    Highs:
Clean and functional room with a newly refurbished bathroom and a fantastic shower ( which is not a standard even in more upmarket places). The views from the terrace are wonderful and sitting there for a sundowner is an extra bonus. Very friendly staff, well trained! The WIFI is also working properly and fast!

    Lows:
Lots of noisy tour groups in the restaurant and food quality was not very good (at least, when you have a half board-package). But they seem to have a different menu, when you eat à-la carte (which might be worth to be considered)

Stunning views over the City but far enough to be quite & relaxing. However the sound of chanting will drift up on a Saturday night & Sunday morning. Good food served by friendly, helpful staff. Nicely decorated, comfortable bedrooms.

Transferred from government to private ownership, this hotel has benefited from major investment in its rooms and facilities including a splendid swimming pool. The location, high above the city, gives wonderful views. Service was efficient and friendly.

Room tip: Ask for room with a view.
