Owner description: The island's famous moai statues were carved from the volcanic rock of this mountain and are scattered across its slopes in various stages of completion.

i rented a mountain bike from town at Clp12,000 for 24 hrs usage. Left Hanga Roa around 10 and reached this marvelous ruins by half noon. Although the Moais statue site can be reached by rent a car or taxi or quad bike. If you can mountain bike it you will greatly appreciate the beauty and wonders of this fabulous site because you will be able to feel the natural landscapes while you reaching nearer to the volcano crater where it is situated. Rano Raraku can be considered one of the most iconic ruins whenever you hear Easter Island because of its postcard-perfect panoramic views of numerous moais statues scattered along the hills of the crater. Indeed it will be a tiring pedal for the whole day. Better bring enough water and snacks as for sure you'll get hungry along the way and there will be no other stores to buy food and drinks except the main cafe at Rano Raraku site and another at the Anakena Beach which is around 2hrs pedal from north of Rano Raraku. and this ruins can only be visted one time per park ticket/person so better be sure you have your ticket because they will be asking for it at the entry point.

Most of the Moai on the island have been moved since the discovery of the island, in that nearly no Moais were discovered standing up. So the sites with standing moai have mostly been "restored". Rano Raraku is the quarry where the moai were chiseled from the volcanic rock so the moai here are in their very original location from where their creators left them. This was my favorite site on the whole island.

This place , along with Ahu Tongariki - is the most iconic of the Moai sights on Easter Island. I have, for years, seen photos of Rano Raraku in magazines and on the TV and to actually stand among the heads was fabulous - a childhood dream come true. Nothing prepares you for the number of standing, leaning and fallen heads on this site. There are some classic and iconic photos to be taken here. I also liked seeing how the Maoi were carved in situ and just abandoned where they lay.

I could go on and on in for hours but words can't convey how wonderful this site is!!!!!
You also great views of the island and coast from this location.

The number 1 must see on the Easter Island. The "birthplace" of the moai. With the biggest moai (more than 20 meters) still remains in the place which it was carved. A truly fascinating & mystical place.

even if the other statues were impressive too, this one remembered me most of the Indiana Jones movies, the reason why I came to South America, to live my childhood dream. Rano is quite isolated, but the formation is just fascinating. Jorge, our guide for that day shared also quite some important facts of this place like that most of the statues that are huge were moved without the support of wheels, large animals or cranes. Very nice place to come closer to an interesting and mystical culture.
