We visited Meteora last week (April 2018) by booking a two day visit with the local company'Visit Meteora.Travel'. The trip included 2nd class tickets to and from Athens, an overnight stay with breakfast at the Divani Hotel (4 star) and two tours: the Sunset Tour, which included visits to two monasteries, and the Half Day morning tour to visit the other monasteries. It also included being picked up from the station and brought to our hotel and being collected from our hotel for the tours and taken to the station to catch the train back to Athens.
First of all, the company was fantastic: the booking online was very easy; we called 2/3 times with our questions which they always answered patiently, never being pushy or rushing us in any way; they upgraded our hotel to 4 star at the last minute without any problem. All our tickets were emailed to us immediately. We considered travelling first class as this is a 5 hour train trip but we were so glad we didn't as 2nd class is more roomy and private than the very squashed first class cabins. Bring food with you as there is a only very basic 'cafe' on the train although not expensive. The train is clean and quiet but the journey is a long one and we needed to walk up and down the train and stretch our legs a lot! You can take a one day tour to this site but we were SO glad we didn't as it would've been so hard to travel for 10 hours and visit the site all in one day!

Our hotel was really lovely-clean, spacious, cool and the staff were absolutely fantastic-again nothing was too much trouble for them. They have an outdoor swimming pool which is bliss to swim in first thing in the morning-we had the pool completely to ourselves! The hotel also provides towels for swimming.

The tours: Meteora is very crowded. The first monastery we went to was more like a noisy marketplace than anything remotely like a spiritual place, with crowds of tourists listening to their respective guides, nuns selling post cards, incense, etc. We just came out and sat in the garden, which gave us some semblance of peace, though not a lot. But, because we took the local tour, we were taken to another monastery which was very quiet and calm and then on a walk into the hills to see another monastery and the caves where the original monks first lived. This was very peaceful and we saw the natural beauty of the area and the spectacular rock formations. We saw the sunset from a strategic place which, although there were about 30 people there, it felt very quiet and spiritual and didn't lose any of its majesty.

The guide we had for the Sunset Tour, Jim (Dimitri) was absolutely fantastic-SO knowledgeable, personable, interesting, amenable, fun - we learned SO much from him and the 4 hour tour felt like 2 hours max! Nothing was too much trouble for him. We also got bottled water when we wanted it which was very welcome. We strongly recommend booking with this company.

The town itself, Kalambaka, is quite sweet. It has some lovely shops and restaurants. We ate dinner in a taverna very near to our hotel-called Valia Calda where the food was home cooked and delicious (lamb, rice & spinach & gigantes (giant beans)) and lunch in the Meteora Taverna in the centre of town, where the food was also absolutely delicious-the aubergines and potatoes cooked in the oven and the Greek salad were amazing. The service in both tavernas was wonderful-so helpful and friendly.

Overall, this attraction is a victim of the massive publicity given to it by the companies Game of Thrones and James Bond and by the positive internet reviews. Apparently we were there at the quiet time! I would hate to be there when it was busy-but I think that Visit Meteora Travel might still manage to make it private and personal and we are definitely glad we visited!

It’s a pity that we can only visit 3 of the monasteries of all in this trip. Really wanna see more. It’s quite exhausted to have this trip in one day since it take almost 10 hour commuting. Strongly suggest to take a two days trip or at least stay one night there.

But it’s a great trip.

Went to 2 tours with "Visit Meteora" . The full day hiking tour and the sunset tour. Both very different in nature since one is hiking and the other one is by shuttle bus. Our guides Christos (hike) and Dimitris (sunset) were fantastic. Very knowledgeable on the trails, history, monasteries, stories of the place. We are very happy we took both the tours but if I had to pick one then it would be the hiking ...since we are into hiking more than anything else. Would definitely do it again

We did the train-2-train tour with Visit Meteora and absolutely enjoyed it. Although our train was delayed by nearly 1/2 an hour, the Visit Metorora guide and the van waited for us and gave us an informative and leisurely visit to two monasteries and plenty of photo opps to others

This was a great experience for our whole family. The hiking level was moderate and the views were amazing and we liked the stories our guides told us as we walked.
