HEED MY WARNING!! I'm serious. Do not put yourself at risk. It is not safe!! It took my boyfriend and I 3.5 hours to hike to the peak of the Volcano where we were ambushed by 3 masked men wielding 2 guns and 1 machete. They threatened us and robbed us of our belongings. They were pulling at my necklace to remove it off my neck. They even attempted to steal my shoes. They took a bag with our personal and valuable belongings ($in the thousands). I managed to hide my phone in my legging pocket and by pressing the right side of my body against a rock and dropped to the ground, while my partners phone was stolen from him. We then had to run down the volcano for 2 hours to head directly to the police. If you would like to do this hike I highly suggest you book a group or a guide otherwise, just don't do it, it is not worth the risk and trauma. Other than this life threatening experience I found the hike to be difficult, and unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy the view from the peak, and unfortunately it has tainted our experience in Guatemala.
