Owner description: The apartheid nationalist government destroyed District Six in the 1960s. This memorial museum contains maps, photographs and other reminders of this old vibrant neighborhood. Site walks and tours in the Museum with ex-resident storytellers are also offered.

We went to the District Six Museum and had no idea how much the visit would educate us and touch us. We walked in and opted to pay a little more and take a tour with a docent. What's amazing is that the docents are actual people who lived in District Six and whose lives were truly impacted by the apartheid. Our docent was wonderful and her stories were so raw that I couldn't contain my emotions. It was a great place to spend the afternoon, and we learned truly learned so much about the history of apartheid and how it has continued to affect South Africans today. I strongly suggest that you spend the very little extra money and take a tour with the docent, it's an experience that you will never forget. I highly recommend this museum to be a place you visit while you are in Cape Town.

This is a one room museum. It used to be a church. It is important to learn about the sad history of the mistreatment of people during apartheid. Do get a guide, as they are most knowledgeable. Look around at all the displays. Remember, as our guide said, “We all bleed the same red blood.”

This museum is definitely worth checking out. It has a tremendous amount of information packed in a relatively small area (a former church). The remembrances of District Six by former residents are touching, as are the street signs, photos, newspaper articles and more.

Visiting this museum with its history of the appalling abuses which took place during the apartheid era is a sobering experience indeed. Up to 60,000 mixed race residences many of whom had been born and grown up here were expelled from this area when it was reclassified as "for whites only." A trip through this museum with a guide who was caught up in the process, captures the heartbreak and depression that our guide and the rest of these people went through. Yet it conveys its message without anger. You don't have a heart or an emotional bone in your body unless you leave here with a lump in your throat or the need for a strong alcoholic beverage to calm down!

This was a really interesting but sad museum. I would however recommend you join the tour we looked around on our own and I felt we missed a bit of the sense of the place without the guide.
