What a wonderful place! Walkers Planes Camp is quite new and you see it. All is modern and stylish, yet in a way also very cosy and homey. The view from the main deck (and all the private decks) over the plains and to the watering hole could hardly be bettered. We had one of two family units which was amazing with a second bedroom with its own shower bathroom and toilet - our 11 year old loved it.
The food was amazing. As always in South Africa there’s a lot of meat but the vegetarian options were also very tasty. The two dinners on the deck (we were there three nights) were gourmet experiences. And even the one boma dinner (a sort of barbecue dinner prepared over open fire and served in the round boma) was very tasty (such boma dinners are traditional and probably more enjoyed by first and second time safari goers). The breakfast menu changed every day, and the one day our daughter didn’t like anything on it, the kitchen made her something else. No lunch is served but you can easily ask for a small snack if feeling peckish. But one should always keep appetite for the amazing high tea, one day with, among other, sushi and cheese cake, another with pulled pork and lemon meringues etc.
The serving staff, managed by lovely Lynette, were service minded, kind and fun, a special shout out to Peace, Caroline and Xoli who really made us feel special. Also the cat was a welcoming presence.
We saw a lot of animals from the deck but also had very good game viewing on the game drives, carried out by the kind and helpful ranger Milly and the knowledgeable and smiling tracker Walter. We saw lions, leopard (with a cub), lots of elephants, rhinos, a buffalo, lots of hyenas (including little ones) and the highlight: the rare and beautiful Wild Dogs - and, of course, lots of plains animals.
Highly recommended.
