The mattresses are extremely old and uncomfortable. I flipped the queen mattress in order to find a better part to sleep on and was shocked by the bad state of what I had to sleep on for 3 nights. The highway noise is constant. There are no cleaning materials provided. For a 3 night stay you have to bring toilet disinfectant, everything. There is no dishwasher. There is a sea view, but you have to stand to appreciate it. The dining chairs and couch gives a pleasant appearance but are so worn that you do not want to sit on it because of the frames drilling into your body. Our DSTV Smart Card could not be activated because the decoder is outdated.

We stayed 3 nights on a self-catering basis in this 2 bedroom unit. It was a last minute booking and very difficult to make a reservation. It is advertised on many travel sites and the prices vary a lot for the same unit. It was most expensive through Tripadvisor – about 40% more, only quoted in U$. I complained to the owner. We accepted the quote from SafariNow.com and paid the deposit. After paying the deposit more costs were added on top of the original quote. They also create confusion because the price is quoted per apartment and then they give the price for a 6 bed unit for 2 persons. I mailed complaints to both the owner and SafariNow.com and was told that if I do not pay their inflated amount, the keys would not be given to me on arrival. We paid prior to our departure and emailed proof of payment to the owner as they demanded. I had to spent hours while driving to Shangri-La 606 to convince them that the payment was done. These are the kind of operators that give internet bookings a bad reputation.
The Shangri-La block is well maintained and independently owned and other units could be better. I would however never go back to 606.

Thank you for staying with us for 3 nights in July and for writing to us.

My wife and I had this holiday flat for more than 10 years now. We love the ocean, enjoy walking at the waves’ edge, especially in the mornings and before sunset. We live in Johannesburg and don’t get to stay there often enough, so at some point we decided to start letting this apartment to other people when we are not there. We are not hoteliers and what we provide to people is definitely not a hotel – it is a home away from home, something we created for ourselves and something we let to people at a fraction of the hotel price. We love the power of the ocean and that penetrating all-encompassing sound (Annie the non-stop noise that you heard was the sound of the ocean!). There is secret that some people discover but some not – if I move one of the tall barstools to the window next to the table, I can sit there for hours watching the ocean, people on the beach, surfers, with beer in my hand. We love our guests and always listen to them. Some give us good ideas, some are confused. Annie you are mentioning there is no dishwasher – in fact there is not, we never said there was! And no coffee-maker, no snooker table. But there is DSTV and please do not try bringing your own DSTV smart card – our decoder does not recognize smart cards that it is not paired with! Many of these things though are available at a variety of cafes, shopping centres, entertainment venues around, and from a convenience store downstairs. Our caretaker Rita will give the most accurate information about the apartment, about the rules and about the area.
We have two main rules that need to be followed by our guests. When these rules are broken, there is always frustration, complaints, unpleasantness. Firstly, there cannot be noise in the apartment or anywhere in the complex after 11 pm. Secondly, full payment must be made up front; all these costs are clearly stated before you book – you will agree that our rates are very reasonable. These moneys go towards maintaining the standards that our guests expect and deserve, we provide high quality linen which is always carefully washed before guests arrive, cleaning, washing liquids and equipment etc, municipal bills, as well as employment for local staff.
When people book with us, we always try to understand what they are after – the apartment is in a high-rise building that is a family-oriented resort. Some people live here permanently, some even have chosen it as their retirement destination. The one group of people we do not allow is noisy companies coming out for a weekend of partying – guys this place is not for you! To everybody else - We hope to see and welcome you as our guests, again and again!
