African Craft Market of Rosebank

When visiting friends could not finish all their souvenir shopping from their tour all over SA and there's some time left for a last minute shopping in Joburg then this shop is the best option. Items are more pricey and the vendors can be persistent. If it's Sunday, then better head up to the Rooftop Sunday Market in Rosebank. They could be the same vendors but most of the time, haggling is easier.

Love coming here because you get the African market vibe, but it's not too aggressive. If you go regularly, you get to know the vendors a bit better, which I have enjoyed. I even got a really good deal because I reminded one fella that I had bought an expensive item from him before, and now I have brought my friend directly to his stall. It does get a little tiring because each vendor tries to get you into their stall, but, hey, that is part of the fun! My visiting friend from America went nuts in here - she loved it, though the vendors wore her out a bit! I totally recommend this place for visitors.

This place has a small entrance floor (which you may think is all there is) but once you go down the stairs there are dozens of stalls with handicraft of different kinds ands from many different parts of Africa. Quality is generally fine and prices - at least compared to the airport and other similar locations - are clearly comfortable. Some bargaining always required, of course.

Rosebank itself is a nice and upper end shopping center with a variety of shops and eateries to choose from. The Craft Market is in a part of this mall. It is quite large, with a variety of "African" items for purchase. Some things may be hand made, though a significant portion of the items were made out of the country. The sellers can be quite aggressive, wanting you to look at their items and purchase from them. So much so that we ended up not purchasing anything and choosing to leave, hoping to find similar items handmade elsewhere.
Items you can find there are beaded items: sandals, wire animal shapes, beaded jewelry. There were carved wood things: masks, animal shapes
Stone carved: bowls, other random shapes.
Carved horn/tusks

Interesting to go and see, but if you are hoping for authentic and handmade, there are other places, for example in downtown Maboneng on Fox street on the weekends.

I used to go there only when I had to travel and take some souvenirs and the Rosebank market (the one on the top floor on the mall) wasn't open. The vendors are very pushy and the articles are pretty repetitive, I just get very dizzy every time I walk in. The people are nice, don't get me wrong, but it creates a "have to buy" atmosphere rather than a friendly stroll. I still did like it as a piece of little African market experience.
