ESA Restaurant and Gift Shop

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 Aug 2016
ESA is one of those restaurants that is best at certain parts of the day. For ESA, that is generally breakfast, the prices are average and some meals are quite good. They have recently slimmed down their menu.

They have some of the best omelettes on the island, particularly the Spanish Omelette if your looking for something tasty and filling. It comes with fresh fruit and toast. The coffee is OK and comes in sets of 2 (one cup and one refill) for 1.50.
They also have decent pancakes.

ESA has indoor seating by the lobby but where you really want to sit is outside on the porch, overlooking the bay. Its a decent place to have a casual breakfast and a nice view.

There is a single toilet in the lobby that is quite cramped but functions.

The staff is friendly but sometimes forgetful (particularly when it comes to coffee refills.) Also, its best to hold off on your refill until your cup is empty, other wise you may get a 'top up' that counts as your refill.

Some of the staff at the restaurant cash register also sell local jewelry, so you can ask them about it when you check out. The bracelets are a bit pricey but beautiful trochus shell.

I have not stayed in the hotel but I have visited their gift shop. There is not much of a selection and it is only opened when you ask for it. However, they do have some interesting postcards which are not easily found on the island. Just ask at the front desk and they will open up the shop for you.

the room is clean, with working air con, hot water, a refrigerator, DVD player and TV.
basic needs are covered, and it is about a 10 min walk to the center of Colonia.
because it is by the water perhaps, or because it was raining a lot when I was there in May, mosquitos are everywhere, and when I was eating dinner, the mosquitos are also feasting on me, but this is not just specific to the hotel.
staff is very friendly, the restaurant tried hard to accommodate my meal preferences.
all in all, a basic hotel. wifi is okay in the lobby, but I did not get reception in my room.
I have stayed at Manta Ray Bay a few times before, and thought I'd find another option. compared to Manta Ray Bay, ESA does not come with the bells and whistles like dive shop, massage and spa, etc., but is cheaper for sure.

I usually dont give 4 stars to a 2 stars Hotel, but this one was different. The hotel itself is not a fancy resort, a very basic place to stay for a week or a shorter period of time. What it makes it special is the service provided by the staff. Attitude again -even in the most hidden paradise on earth- beats mediocrity. Kudos. There is nothing this guys can't do for you, so you can feel like home.

I stayed for a few days on a business trip. The hotel is located right on the bay, so the rooms have good views. The rooms are quite basic, but clean. The bed was comfortable. The air conditioners are wall type, so a bit noisy and only just enough to cool the room. There are TV's, but there is only a DVD player attached. You can rent a DVD for $1.50 from reception. It is a shame they do not have a few channels from the cable system which is available locally.

Wifi works quite well in reception and the rooms closest to reception. Food in the restaurant was very good. Overall, service was very good too. There is a shop across the street where you can buy some provisions.

The motel-style resort is centrally located in Colonia and situated on a water front lot. Most rooms are large and have water views. The downstairs restaurant is decent and also affordable. Spotty yet free wifi.
Free airport pick-up and drop off even late at night.

Cons: no kettle in the room.

The best quality of the hotel are the staff. All very kind, good-humoured and available to help. Much more so than the Manta Ray resort (where I was given attitude and treated with disrespect by one of the reception staff members). I would definitely stay at ESA again.
