We had to stay in Timaru during a road trip. Firstly if you are planning to stay in Timaru but don't really have a reason to - I would suggest not coming! It isn't one of New Zealands treasures!
Anyway this motel wasn't great BUT looking at the other motels on the road, I don't think it would have been any worse than the others.
Very dated. Furnishings all look to be from the 1960's. Bed was uncomfortable, we had to move matress onto the floor. The noise from the road is very loud - and the road that runs outside is pretty much the busiest on the South Island - therefore if you wanted to sleep late I imagine this would be a problem.
Bathroom was very old, shower spat water rather than an even flow.
This really wasn't a comfortable or pleasant experience BUT I think you will be limited to for choice in Timaru as we only saw one decent looking motel about a mile down the road. In fairness it is a cheap motel and doesn't pretend to be anything else. I would only stay here
a. If you have to stop in Timaru
b. You are on a tight budget
