Review of Grosvenor Hotel

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grosvenor. Check in was great - quick, efficient and exceedingly friendly. It was a lovely warm welcome. Stayed on the first floor but they have a useful, original manual lift which is always great fun. Our room, 101,was huge with two double sofas and coffee table, a very large bed and all for a reasonable price. Bathroom was a little bit dated but this is a heritage building and a budget conscious hotel so was perfectly acceptable for the price we paid. Location was great for us as we were here mainly to visit Caroline Bay to see the penguins and the hotel was only an easy 10 minute walk away. The top moment was discovering that the Queen had used this room in 1954! That gave us a huge giggle! I have read some previous negative reviews but seriously, the hotel is an extremely affordable no-frills place and you get what you pay for. We had a great time here.

Always a good stay - partner booked in August 2019 - I last reviewed on TripAdvisor in May 2014 and still the same great service. Clean, comfortable and good value for money, central Timaru and walking distance to shops, Caroline bay and always scored good views of the port/sea.
Staying again this upcoming weekend, looking forward to a game of pool, good meal and settling into watch the All Blacks beat England!

After booking the Queen suite for two nights, I had an afterthought of checking the reviews, reading some of the awful comments that people had written I began to be nervous about what i would find.

From arrival, I knew i had made the right decision, the receptionist is lovely- welcoming and the building has old world charm- take heed you are staying in a heritage building so things aren't ever going to be new-build perfect but everything is where it counts- the room was spotless and the suite a lovely layout- especially for someone like me travelling for work with a small lounge and large comfy bed and TV.

I ordered room service and the meal was to die for delivered swiftly by a friendly staff member. It is clear to see from reviews do you research on what a standard room is- for $85 a night I'm unsure why people would expect a 5 star hotel. Love the old world charm and how close it is to the main town.

Would happily recommend room 101 to anyone travelling to Timaru.

Room tip: Suites are recommended

Overpriced and extremely misleading. I am annoyed we didn't read the reviews prior to our stay here!! My husband and I had a stopover in Timaru and upon booking at the Grosvenor we believed we had found what was described as a "boutique" hotel. I would describe this as a backpackers/dormitory with extremely cheap decor. We booked a standard room and were told it would have a king bed (as stated on the website) we in fact did not, the bathroom was an absolute disgrace it was unclean, paint peeling, vinyl falling off and extremely outdated. The room itself was disgusting the two bedside tables were not cleaned, mattress is far too old we could feel the springs and both our backs are sore today. The carpeted walls had black marks and stains all over them and I don't care what they are but it looked extremely dirty and unsafe. Rooms definitely not soundproof - the people in the room next to us who were having what they thought was a private conversation was very well heard in our room. Also whenever someone walked past the room it was extremely loud.

The one star we give goes to the extremely friendly and helpful reception lady. We were laughing as she took our credit card information incase we used the mini bar which we did not have in our room?

Greetings Ehill91

Your definition of a boutique hotel is those pricey 5 stars accommodation that's ranging from over $290++ per evening and places like that wouldn't have Standard Rooms, Superior Rooms, and Suites. All their rooms would most definitely be Grand Suites with exemplary services.

This is what's been written on our website, and we didn't say that we are a boutique hotel: Although we have been called a boutique hotel and a hip hotel, we’re not sure what that really means....

You have the right to inspect the room prior to confirming your stay here (unless you have booked with a Third Party booking site).

Haters will always be haters and there's nothing that we can do about that. It so happened that ALL negative reviews here are all from people staying at Standard Rooms. All these reviewers are feeling entitled, and us hotel operators do give you a choice. You get better amenities, better views by paying more. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

You found it amusing because we didn't have a mini bar in the hotel room but reality of the matter is that customers do order for room service and they do a runner by not paying.

For reviewers, you might think that it is only a review, and in most cases, it is written subjectively and with malice because you couldn't get what you think you are entitled to but spare the thought for the twenty eight employees that actually work here. The hotel is their livelihood to put the food on the table.

We have also come across customers now that are using social media as a weapon. They would be staying here and then, finding means to complain about our facilities and then, they demand for a free stay or a substantial discount. And in more cases than one, they would even threaten us that if we don't take heed of their demands, they would leave nasty remarks on the social media just because they can.

In summary, if you want better amenities and better services, pay more. Inspect the room before confirming your stay. If you use Third Party to confirm the booking (just because you want to get the best deal), then, don't throw tantrums when our front office tells you to contact the Third Party website to cancel the booking. This is no different from any other hotels in the world.

Sincerely

Team Grosvenor

We were in shock when we opened the door to our standard room. We knew we weren’t staying in a finer hotel and did not expect too much. This hotel is just gross. Obviously, it is NOT anywhere close to the pictures online (picture 1). There is a difference between their description of “hip” and downright disturbing! We didn’t have a nice little table in our room like the one shown in their picture. We weren’t expecting a view and was not surprised that we were right. What surprised us was the matted and crunchy carpet that we didn’t want to touch without our shoes. There were nasty stains all over the wall, security was a single, flimsy chain on the door, whatever kind of felt they used for the wallpaper behind the bed was loose and looked extremely cheap, the tv reception was spotty and not clear and, the bathroom looked like something from the twilight zone. The bathtub was stained and nasty looking. Needless to say, we didn’t stay long and certainly will not be back. Someone needs to do this grand old hotel some justice and clean it up. The only reason this hotel is getting two stars is because the staff was nice.

Hiya Carolyn

You get what you pay for.

In our website, the wording is as such: Although we have been called a boutique hotel and a hip hotel, we’re not sure what that really means.....(so, please do not misconstrue our words).

We are not a vanilla hotel, noting that this is a historical hotel dated 1875 and no hotel rooms are the same as we need to configure the rooms to suit the shape of the building itself. When you book last minute and you want the cheapest room, we could only provide you with the last room available, and that is not through the fault of our own for not giving you a better room. We cannot possibly put the pictures of ALL hotels into the website as we have fifty rooms and they are all designed differently. A quick tip is this: if you pay more rates, you get better room with better amenities and better views. This is no different from an airline, differentiating between the Business Class and the Economy Class.

As a consumer, you have the right to examine the room before agreeing to stay in there. We do not force or coerce you to stay in a room that you are not comfortable with, right?

Talking about flimsy chain on the door, that's like picking bones. If someone truly wants to break into the room, they would BUT what is the chance of that happening in real life? The rest of your negative comments is simply laughable. Aren't you desperate to want to destroy the livelihood of the staff working here just because you can't have it your way? Being in hospitality industry for so long, we are accustomed to entitled customers that demand the best but not willing to fork out the money.

That's the irony of your statement: someone needs to do this grand old hotel some justice and clean it up. When customers such as yourself are not willing to spend good money to support our business AND doing your best to want to ruin our business, when or how are we supposed to restore this place? To bring this up to speck will require spending millions, and kindly work out the math, this is not something that could be done overnight.

Yes, we are aware that you won't be back and that's fine by us. We send you positive energy.

Faithfully

Team Grosvenor

Location, parking, bar and meals: no problem.

But owners of this establishment need to have a sleep at the hotel.

They would find that beds need to be replaced. The mattresses have well gone past their nice comfortable stage.

Yes it is an older hotel and the room rates not too bad. But unless the beds changed I will not be returning.

Hiya NZ2

Yes, as co-owners of the hotel, we have been residing here for the past 12 years.

Our hotel comprises of Suites, Superior Rooms and Standard Rooms. We have an ongoing continuous improvement program for the hotel, just like any other hotels in the world.

We start with Suites first, followed by Superior Rooms and Standard Rooms the last.

For better beds, kindly pay more money for better grade rooms. Is that okay by you?

Thanks, Team Grosvenor
