Relaxing break from our RV tour.

Review of Glendeer Lodge
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 29 Feb 2020via mobile
We are touring the South Island in a large RV, having already toured the north Island with a SUV using B&B.
My wife isn’t a great enthusiast of camping, even with a monster RV, so the compromise we have, is to stop every few nights in a luxury B&B for her to gain her sanity, ( her words).
Glendeer was ideal for that purpose, it’s large, with a small number of guests, very quiet, and spotless in any area, common and bedroom.
It has a huge private car park, ideal to get the starship Enterprise parked, our name for the RV.
We found our hosts chatty and very informative of the whole area, it was nice to have two way conversation about our experience and theirs, so thank you for that.
Our room was large, extremely well decorated and nicely fitted, lovely walk in shower, and most importantly, a very comfortable bed.
Breakfast was excellent, everything you need before another day in charge of the Enterprise and a happy wife.
Thank you for a lovely stay, and we wish you both well in your business and life.
I will and have recommended your B&B.

The accommodation is the ground floor of the owner's home. They live above.
The 3 bedrooms are off a short hallway which is open to a communal lounge and kitchen, with no separating door. Meaning you hear anything happening in those common areas. The bedrooms do not have tea & coffee facilities so you need to use the common kitchen (which has a connecting wall to one of the bedrooms as does the lounge).
The walls were not soundproofed.
On arrival we were informed our tv wasnt working and they hoped a technician was coming over the next few days but we could watch the small tv in the lounge. We didnt feel comfortable doing that as the other 2 bedrooms would have had to listen to what we were watching.
The night we stayed the owner came into the lounge in the evening talking to a guest in the lounge till around 9.30 pm & we heard the whole conversation in our room.
Lovely bathroom. Very clean. Bed very comfortable. No full length mirror.
The owner comes in in the mornings and puts out breakfast. Breakfast was excellent.
The setup didnt work for us and for the price paid we thought it was high for how & what it is.

Dear Christine,
I am so sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay with us, but I can reassure you that all of our house is fully soundproofed to Council standard and we regularly have guests compliment how lovely and peaceful it is.
In my 15 years of running our Bed & Breakfast I have generally found that the people who come to stay here do so because they enjoy the social side of staying with a host and this goes hand in hand with conversation and I genuinely enjoy hearing from our guests if they have had a great meal out or enjoyed a local attraction.
Yes a Bed & Breakfast isn’t for everyone but I am glad that you enjoyed the breakfast!
Kind Regards
Jude

We just wanted to say a thank you to the owners for a pleasant stay and also thanks for the timely advice which saved us from a very unpleasant predicament!

There had been severe rainfall and storms on the day we stayed. We had planned to spend some time in Timaru town before making our way up to Christchurch for our final day in New Zealand. The owners fortunately told us that there were flood alerts regarding the sole bridge leading up to Christchurch. We changed our plans and headed straight for the bridge. We ended up passing it 20-30 minutes before it closed due to flooding and we've been checking the state of the bridge for interest. It ended up being closed for several days and we would have been stuck, so thank you for the advice! Unfortunately we didn't get an opportunity to say hi to your deers, but perhaps next time!

The hosts are two wonderful people who've kept a lovely house set up for their guests. The bedroom we used (garden view) is huge and has it's own bathroom. The bed is also large and very comfortable.
Their local knowledge guided us to see some spectacular views down at Mount John later on in the day.

Room tip: The Garden View room is excellent.

I really can not recommend Glendeer Lodge enough! It was a wonderful accommodation and our hosts were delightful. They accommodated us at the last minute due to a weather-related change in our itinerary. We were so glad not to miss out on Timaru! The walking path they recommended down the road was beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery.

Lovely to hear from you and thank you for your kind words. We are very lucky that our local area has been very well developed with the Tuhawaiki (Jack's) Point Lighthouse coastal walkway, this is located at the end of our road and it is a fabulous track with the dramatic cliff-face on one side and farmland with mountain views on the other. Timaru has some wonderful local attractions and really worth a two night visit!

So glad you enjoyed your stay and again thank you for your recommendation we really do try and welcome all our guests and love hearing about your travels around this fabulous part of New Zealand.
We hope to see you again sometime.
Kind Regards
Jude McLauchlan
