What an awesome experience! Phil took wonderful care of us (me and the family of four that was also on this trip). Such beauty! Saw several pairs of Whio (endangered NZ duck), stayed at some beautiful camp sites. Really feel we got the inside word and saw the bridge to nowhere the best possible way!
Great food and learnt lots. Perfect for families.
Thanks Phil and Kirtsy you guys rock!!!!

Thank Margaret M

We have travelled on other guided river trips several times and found the guides Cole and Jeremy to be perhaps the finest pair of leaders with whom we have had the privilege to travel. Expert in camp and on the water, they kept the youth entertained and the group safe despite our misfortune to encounter severe rains on the last days of the trip.
The river itself runs through staggering beauty and wilderness. Waterfalls galore. The fact that this area was “settled” in the early 1900s is amazing. Our hike to the bridge to nowhere was made all the more interesting with Cole and Jeremy’s narration.
Our group consisted of three family/friend groupings with a total of 8 youths from 7-17. Ample food, safe and plentiful drinking water, good quality equipment, safe canoes, and watertight barrels for personal gear.
This is a quality outdoor company. We highly recommend this trip!
Thanks again to both Jeremy and Cole.

After some apprehension the first small rapid 5 mins end put an end to it! From then on we had an amazing 5 days. Our guide, Canon was great, good cook, knowledgable and above all explained how to go about paddling in easy terms, we were never wondering how to or which line to take as Canon had already covered it before we got to any ‘tricky’ parts of the river. Phil and Kirsty were very helpful with preparation for the trip and their lodge is a great place to stay pre trip. The DOC campsites are well set up along the river as are the huts if you prefer them to camping. And yes, capsizing was all part of the trip, we only went over once, just when the finish line was in sight, but I think I would have been disappointed if we hadn’t, it is all part of the great experience the Whanganui offers! Thank you Canoe Safaris.

My fiance and I arrived at the Canoe Safaris Lodge the night before our three day adventure, we received a warm welcome from the owners Phil and Kirsty who talked us through what we could expect the following day.

We were allocated a room and recommended some local dinner spots. The room at the lodge was perfectly sufficient and there was a decent sized communal spa (although we didn't use it), for dinner we opted for The Blind Finch which was just around the corner and serves a great vegan burger.

We chose a three day guided tour and were very lucky to have a fantastic guide named Cole. Cole was extremely affable, very knowledgeable about canoeing and the history of the river and a great cook.

My partner and I requested a vegan menu, we accepted that this probably wasn't a requirement that the company catered for so we had relatively muted expectations for the food - how wrong we were. The menu was absolutely fantastic, and Cole executed the menu brilliantly, lunches consisted of delicious wraps and dinner was pasta dish on the first night served with a cider (requested) and of course dessert, on the second night a flavoursome curry. Suffice to say were were never hungry on this trip.

The river itself is like something out of a Peter Jackson film, a lost world. The river weaves its way through dense native forest, steep gorges, fast moving rapids. Where the scenery adds splender, the rapids add excitement, as we would discover there is more to successfully maneuvering a rapid than we thought. Cole explained each rapid to us as we were approaching it, our new found vocabulary came in handy with words such as washing machines, wall-bangers and eddies now rolling off our tongue. With Coles expert advice we were able to navigate every rapid with a single capsize which was not the case for some of the other groups that were on the river.

All in all a great experience that we would recommend to anyone looking for an adventure.

I thoroughly recommend the three day canoeing trip on the Whanganui River with Canoe Safaris. My husband & I joined a small group of two Americans on their honeymoon plus three guides and had a great time. Our guides, Phil, Cole and Karen could not have done more for us. The paddling was at times hard (especially with a head wind for two of the days) but our guides ensured that we had adequate rests and were well fed along the way. The meals provided were amazing, imagine our surprise on the first night when a tub of ice cream was produced for dessert! The scenery of the Whanganui National Park is spectacular and a walk to the Bridge to Nowhere is a highlight of the trip. Despite our best intentions to remain dry in the canoe, we fell out in a rapid on the last day - a shock to the body, but we were soon back in our canoe paddling again with the help of our guides. Thanks for a memorable trip!
