I thoroughly recommend the three day canoeing trip on the Whanganui River with Canoe Safaris. My husband & I joined a small group of two Americans on their honeymoon plus three guides and had a great time. Our guides, Phil, Cole and Karen could not have done more for us. The paddling was at times hard (especially with a head wind for two of the days) but our guides ensured that we had adequate rests and were well fed along the way. The meals provided were amazing, imagine our surprise on the first night when a tub of ice cream was produced for dessert! The scenery of the Whanganui National Park is spectacular and a walk to the Bridge to Nowhere is a highlight of the trip. Despite our best intentions to remain dry in the canoe, we fell out in a rapid on the last day - a shock to the body, but we were soon back in our canoe paddling again with the help of our guides. Thanks for a memorable trip!

We did three day tour with two other couples and had 2 guides with us. Awesome couple, white water rafting guides from America so felt very confident with their experience! We were given barrels for our gear, a dry bag and small bag for camera etc. our guides, Brent and Jenny were friendly, welcoming and full of information and advice about the canoe, accomodation and area we were travelling. We took the tour in April so sun and mozzies were not so mch of a problem. At this time of year take warm layers and socks as, although we did not capsize, your feet get wet getting in and out the canoes and get very cold! First night camping which was great. Second night we managed to score the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge! (Fantastic place!)
The food supplied was awesome. All prepared at our nights accomodation. Plenty to eat. I never ate the snacks I bought! Can't speak highly enough of our guides. They were well prepared and made sure we were too!
I would also agree with the other recommendation. Some stamina and agility is required to get up some of the muddy paths!

I would not recommend this company at all to a large group of people. Its all about the money for this company and I was shocked at how Simon did not care about the fact that the person not wanting to canoe anymore had no emergency plan in action and expected the injured person to walk back to Taumaranui and wait for the bus to pick us up. We walked 2 hours to get to the main road and waited 45 minutes before we were picked up. Very Very disappointed. Not a good choice for canoeing.

When someone falls out of a canoe it often takes time before they sort themselves out (cold, shock etc) and decide what they are going to do. Guides Charles and Jenn talked to her while we organised canoes etc and she decided that she could in fact walk back to the road (not far away). We also have cellphone coverage so the driver was phoned and advised to drive back to the road to pick her up. If a helicopter was needed we could have got one, but after time she decided that she would be able to walk back to the road. There were 24 in the group so the remainder did the rest of the trip without incident. I cannot see how it was all about money - we gave the group a good discount and changed our trip times to suit them. Tip-outs are not intended and some people react differently to being in the water.
