“Gorgeous place, relaxing and stylish”
Reviewed 18 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

Mandalay Hideaway is tucked away amongst the paddy fields far from the madding crowds of Kuta and Seminyak. It's a lovely place, very quiet and well laid out - both in practical and stylistic terms. Nice and airy, with a huge living room going straight onto the pool/garden area.

There's also more than enough space for three couples; the rooms are sufficiently spread out (all with ensuite facilities) that you can keep out of each other's hair, if that's what you want!

Staff also very friendly and helpful and food was top notch.

Thoroughly recommended.

We have just returned from a lovely week's stay at Mandalay Hideaway with a group of friends. We're frequent villa renters in Bali and pretty picky - what we liked about this one was that it also provides some of the things you only normally find in hotels and miss when renting a villa, e.g. a concierge, a decent food and wine menu, and fancy toiletries!

The place is in a really beautiful spot, the photos on the website don’t do it justice, and the view is stunning. Rida, the concierge, and the staff were all lovely, professional and courteous but also very friendly and genuinely caring.

The food was first class, so much so that we ended up eating at the villa most days. There are also two excellent hotels nearby - Allila Soori and Pan Pacific - both cool beachfront spots with nice restaurants and bars and a short trip from the villa. Echo Beach is about 20 minutes where you also have a bunch of places to eat, drink and shop and Seminyak is about half an hour, so quite do-able for a nightlife outing. The beach just down the road from the villa was also lovely, not another soul in sight and just long stretches of surf and sand backed by tropical jungle, great for private swimming! The location really is great if you want to combine peace and tranquility in the “real Bali” (and wake up with a nice view, not starting at another villa as is all too often the case) but still be able to pop out to shop, eat and drink without having a long slog.

We’d seen the previous review online a few days before our departure and were a little concerned about some of the issues raised, however we were relieved that none of them tuned about to be a problem. The area was beautifully quiet (and smoke free!), the electricity and water issues had clearly been sorted out, driving times were about accurate, and all the fancy TV and accompanying gadgets worked great! All in all highly recommended.

Your comments are very much appreciated and we're pleased to hear that our villa-hotel crossover concept went down well. But we'll look into hiring a new photographer!

“Exactly what Bali should be”
Reviewed 17 May 2014 for a stay in April 2014

My partner and I stayed at Mandalay Hideaway with a couple of friends for a week in April. I loved every bit of it. They've put a lot of thought and love into making it a true hideaway. Its the perfect place to stay with other couples who are torn between wanting to be social and wanting to get away from it all. If you're sick of the hubbub of the Aussie colonies of South Bali, its well worth making the trek out and want to be among a more real and tranquil kind of Bali.

Each room was very separate from the others - complete with walk in robes and private bathrooms, so you didn't feel weird hanging out by yourself. Yet there were relaxed communal spaces for lounging around and drinking too much into the wee hours of the morning. All the spaces were beautifully decorated, functional, and tranquil. Plenty of the subtle touches and thoughtful design that you would expect from a vacation rental, combined with the sleek Balinese style of a top-notch hotel.

The staff were uber-friendly, helpful, and at times good to have a laugh with. We felt very safe with the typical balinese overkill on security, so the wonderfully isolated location wasn't ever spooky. They have the airport pickup down to a fine art. Pretty decent cooks too. You never want for anything they haven't already thought of.

I recommend getting a motorbike to explore the charming surrounds independently rather than being dependent on the driver and the frustrated by the traffic heading into town. Definitely look through the guide they offer, and explore the local recommendations for restaurants, beaches, sites, etc rather than travelling into Seminyak by default. Just be sure to mark the location into your phone GPS as it can be tricky to find at times.

“Rural isolation”

From a positive perspective, the airport VIP pickup was great, the villa is beautiful, and the staff were very helpful. The place was also kept clean.

Some things that may not have been written here. The local Hindu temple woke us up at 6am daily; the rice farmers smoked us out each morning burning their fields nearby; the electrics went out several times per day (sometimes per hour); the home cooked food was a bit average; and the home entertainment system (incl Apple TV) was great, but took us 5 days to work out how to get both sound and picture (the kids kept changing it).

We also had a problem with the master bathroom having no water pressure, and the water pump making a banging noise right outside our room. This was replaced during our week with an electric pump, which made a noise even harder to sleep with. Somehow this was fixed on the last day, but cost us 4 nights of poor sleep.

Perhaps the most important thing for visitors to realise is that this villa is isolated. There are no shops or restaurants to walk to. The bars, restaurants, and beaches of Seminyak are about 60 minutes away (not 25), Tanah Lot 25 min, and Canggu 45 min. The traffic was very slow, and round-trip this means a lot of travelling.

The nearest beach (10 min) had nothing there, and may not be safe for swimming. I would argue the best "nearby" trip (45 min) would be Echo Beach, were there is good food and great atmosphere.

I would still recommend this villa to adults wanting complete isolation, and an authentic rural Balinese experience. I would not, however, for people who want to get out and about.

Many thanks indeed for your review and for giving us the opportunity to address your concerns:

1. It was indeed the annual festival for the local temple during your stay which meant that there was some early morning chanting during a three day period. We appreciate that this could be disturbing to light sleepers. Nevertheless we would stress that this is a once-a-year occurrence and we have found that normally our guests have not been woken / disturbed by it.

2. A couple of times a year the rice stubble is indeed burnt off, but the smoke is not normally at anywhere near a level to cause a disturbance, usually just forming a brief early-evening mist over the neighbouring jungle. We are sorry to hear that in this case it did cause a nuisance.

3. We had just installed a new entertainment system, with 50-inch LED-HDTV, surround sound system etc. prior to your check-in. We apologise that the staff training on the new equipment may have not been quite up-to-speed and have now worked to remedy this in addition to supplying an in-villa guide.

4. We do apologise for the electrical problems during your stay which were due to a fault at the local sub-station. This is the first time we have experienced this in more than three years of operation. We are pleased to say that the electricity company have now carried out the requisite maintenance work to rectify this issue.

5. We regret the noise of the roof water-pump and have now replaced this with a new model to ensure silent operation.

6. Regarding drive times, we would like to stress that your stay was during the Easter Weekend which is one of the very busiest times of the year in Bali. There was also unseasonable rain during your stay as well as some road works on the road to Seminyak. Normal drive times are, as mentioned on our website, 45 minutes to the airport, 25 minutes to Seminyak, 20 minutes to Echo Beach, 40 minutes to Ubud, 7 minutes to Tanah Lot, and 5 minutes to the local beach.

7. We are a few minutes drive from the five star Pan Pacific and Alila Hotels which offer a range of first class bars and restaurants. In terms of shopping, while the nearest tourist-focused boutiques etc are indeed half an hour away, there are local shops in the village and, in addition, the staff are always available to pick up and deliver anything that you may require to the villa.

8. We do make a car and driver available 24-7, free of charge, for all guests which should make getting around as hassle-free as possible.

9. Swimming at the local beach should not be an issue and guests do this regularly. I appreciate that the lack of development (bars, restaurants, etc) there may be seen as a disadvantage by some though others do very much appreciate the pristine sand and tropical vegetation along with the lack of other tourists.

Many thanks for your kind comments regarding the villa itself and the service from the staff - we do hope that, despite some of your less favourable experiences, we have the opportunity to welcome you again at Mandalay some time soon.

Best Regards,

Andy Benfield
