We visited Playa Bonita Beach on March 7, 2015. We were the only "out of owners" present and saw less than 5 other people on the beach. There was a lady present selling various things to drink and another man renting umbrellas. The waves were really rolling in, at least 3-4 feet in height. We choose to not enter the water as it seemed fairly unsafe due to the crashing waves. Our guide told us that this was not a good time of year to visit this particular beach. The beach seemed clean and the area as a whole was quite beautiful. There was a restaurant just above the beach and a small grocery there as well.
We had gone on a great shore excursion with Syltravel Day Tours while docked in port. This was our last stop and boy what a beach. VERY private and peaceful. You can eat and drink at the nearby restaurant/bar. Waves looked pretty choppy and not sure how it would be to swim but it sure is beautiful. A great place to meditate.
About a 10 min drive from downtown Limon. Around the beach there are a few bars and restaurants and of course souvenir shops. It's more of a major beach for locals. It's gets packed around the holidays. Great place to read a book, take pictures, and dunk yourself in the warm water.
Playa Bonita is a nice beach about 4 kms from Puerto Limon town. It's a short ride and taxi drivers ask $10 one way for the trip. You can probably get it for less. Alternatively, there are public buses that head out there fairly frequently from downtown Puerto Limon. The beach is okay but certainly not the best that the Caribbean has to offer, There are two restaurants on the beach that serve drinks and decent meals for a reasonable price. If you're on a cruise and don't want any of the over-priced excursions, then this is a reasonable option for you. A guy on t/he beach will also rent you chairs.
When our cruise ship docked in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, and we had seen pictures of this beautiful beach. We found that it was a $10 per person each way, cab ride from the cruise pier. We had to pay for both ways and our cab driver set a pickup time with us. It was a Sunday so this free beach was probably more crowded than normal. There were several groups of people from our ship along with some performers from the theater. The beach had palm trees for some shade and a nearby restaurant and bar for food and drink. The surf is a little rough but fun, reminding me of New Jersey. It was an inexpensive way to see the area without booking an excursion.
