We had a wonderful stay for a family vacation--the space easily accommodated our family of 4. We visited during the rainy season, which just meant rain most afternoons, but very clear mornings/early afternoons. One thing we noticed was that the Playa Protero area had a lot more standing water on the ground, which meant a lot of more mosquitos than some of the other nearby areas. This wasn't a huge deal--but it and the humidity did make the air conditioning a great benefit. The house was spacious, very clean, and beautiful. The kitchen was well stocked and easy to use, and we really appreciated the washer/dryer (although the dryer seemed to be going out). The pool was also great and very well maintained by the onsite caretaker, who was very helpful and had a lot of very useful information. Beaches are close by (the best ones are much better accessible by car than by foot) and were absolutely amazing. We highly recommend!
When you book this property the owners will send a welcome email with a map and a 28 page PDF that they created for you to refer to throughout your stay. It included pictures with long detailed descriptions of anything from all beach locations within an hour away, local fruit stands and restaurants, to locations of medical clinics in case of a medical emergency (and much more). Just about every topic imaginable is covered in this document and provides an explanation on how to fulfill your requests. This was the first time I have ever booked a private property where they provided this much useful information. You can tell the owners take pride in this property and are genuinely happy to help you have a great vacation. There is also staff that work as the maintenance, security, and concierge who are extremely helpful and will give great advice. For example, we wanted to walk to a beach (different beach than the one located one block from the property) that was far away and the concierge told us to walk in the morning when the tide was down and take a cab back because the tide will shift and the water will be too high to walk back along the beach. This was a detail we never would have thought of. The growing pains of being in a new country and traveling are limited by the extremely helpful staff. Also not enough can be said about Francisco (man in charge of maintenance and security). He keeps the property looking like paradise and can either help you with your request or get you in touch with the correct person. Everyone involved in the process of staying at this property does their job extremely well.
We are a family of four and we stayed here in a group but we still had our own privacy surrounded by lush tropical plants and pathways to our condo that felt like home away from home. There is a full size kitchen stocked with the necessary items we needed, which allowed us to stay in this beautiful property for some of our meals. Both bedrooms have balconies where we enjoyed listening to the many beautiful birds. The master bedroom has a king size bed that is very comfortable. Francisco and Marling, the caretakers of Stef Surf are wonderful and so helpful and welcoming. The Playa Potrero beach, which is beautiful is less than a five minute walk and isn't crowded. It is a short 15 minute walk to the restaurant (Los Brisas) on the beach one way and a 40 minute walk to Playa Flamingo the other direction. The pool at Stef Surf was so lovely and a great thing to do after a busy day full of adventures. There are many restaurants to chose from near by. The macadamia nut and banana pancakes are amazing at The Shack which is a short walk down the road. There are stores close by, Super Merkdo is a 2 minute walk down the road and has everything you need. Tamarindo is a half hour drive away and if you want souvenirs this is the place to go. We had 10 days in Costa Rica and couldn't have stayed at a better place then Stef Surf. We will definitely be going back and staying here.
The property is peaceful, charming, with plenty of room indoors, green oasis outdoor and all spotless clean and beautifully decorated. Above all it is very friendly and welcoming. We met Greg and Gladys, the owners, Francisco the caretaker and the amazing Liz who all made our days in the area so interesting and fun, with great recommendations for beaches nearby, diving center and restaurants.
We stayed for one week after Christmas and into January 2017, and loved every minute. There are so many positive aspects about staying at Stef Surf over a resort, hotel, or other condo complex.
1. Within 2 (very short) blocks walk to the beach (Playa Potrero) and at least five other nearby beaches easily accessible by car.
2. Two-story, two-bedroom (high-quality bedding, furnishings, and very comfortable mattress), two-bathroom spacious dwelling with gourmet kitchen, balconies (yes, plural), patio, grill, private entrance, laundry facilities, and modern media / communication (tv, cable, wi-fi internet).
3. Lovey pool to relax by and swim in (which we did, every day).
4. Complete peace of mind in terms of security of cars, dwelling, property itself with two caretakers living on the property, high walls, and additional community security.
5. Nearby nicer casual restaurants, within walking a 5-minute distance, for lunch and dinner options. (They all accepted credit cards as well!)
This is the perfect place for a relaxing vacation! We chose this place because we have already been to Costa Rica several times in the past and just wanted to relax: run on the beach, visit a different beach every day, return back and swim, go out to eat, and drink wine. For those seeking adventure as well, the property also facilitates excursions for thrill-seekers and nature-lovers (zip lining, visits to national parks/rain forests/ Arenal, etc.) for no additional charge. The property has two telephones for guests to use, which makes it nice for travelers without an international cell phone.
If we return again to Costa Rica, we are definitely staying at Stef Surf!
