The Danaus Ecocentre is a pocket of rainforest in the centre of farmland, reclaimed over the past 50 years. It's hard to believe this little haven of jungle was a farm only half a century ago - at least to my untrained eyes. Because it is relatively small and isolated, there is a high concentration of species here, making sightings more likely. The fauna here have all arrived by choice - it's not a rescue centre. These are wild animals that have made this their home - although clearly they are more accustomed to humans than those living in pristine remote forests might be.

The entrance has bathrooms and a gift shop, and a small area just outside attracts an incredible range of tropical birds. I could have spent a whole day just sitting there. There are simple mud trails around the park, easy to follow and nothing steep or difficult. You can see plenty of Costa Rica's rich biodiversity here. On a 2 hour visit I saw two species of lizard, sloths, hummingbirds, various tanagers, motmots, orioles, chacalacas, caracara, heron, woodpecker, agouti, and frogs. There is also a lake with waterbirds and caiman.

The small size and easy trails would make this a good place to bring younger children who might struggle with longer treks in the wilder parks. It also makes for some easier wildlife spotting for adults. I'd highly recommend to visitors to the area, and it can easily be combined with other activities, such as hot springs, La Fortuna waterfall, walks in the national park, horse-riding etc. The park also offers night tours, which I didn't do myself but having done one elsewhere reckon would be pretty good here and probably nicer than in other areas as the paths are easier - a real advantage in darkness.

This night tour of the private reserve was the highlight of my 8 days in Costa Rica. I liked the night tour so well that I went back without a guide during the day - both experiences are great but I highly recommend the night tour with Elias, he is exceptional. Elias founds tons of life for us to observe - sloths, frogs, caimans, lizards, animals in the raccoon family, nesting birds. Elias was very knowledgeable about the rainforest and answered all our questions and gave us time for pictures, spoke excellent English. This place is trying to educate and protect rainforest life and deserves our support. The $38 night tour fee was worth every penny.

This little park really need a guide and it worth it !
We had Elias as guide and he was amazing !
We have seen all the celebrities from Costa Rica : sloths with baby, caïmans, frogs, toucans and so many others birds !
He helped us to take great pics of these animals even with an iPhone!
The park without guide is really not the same ...
Think to make a reservation of you want a guide !

We saw more animals here and up close. Saw two sloths, one with a baby. Also got up close with male and female"jesus" lizards. Saw a caiman in the lagoon and lots of colorful butterflies in the butterfly enclosure. Lots of plants clearly marked. Lots of nesting birds.
