Unforgettable family trip

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Apr 2022via mobile
Returned to Vomo recently with family and absolutely loved the entire trip. It is an incredibly luxurious experience.

Our beach villa was stunning, food and service was brilliant (3 course lunch and dinners! Yum!) and we made new friends by the pool. The kids made friends at kids club too and proudly wear their printed and tie-dyed T-shirts. We did a snorkelling day trip to White Rock and saw lots of colourful fish, starfish, and bright corals. Also snorkeled with some friendly reef sharks - 6 yo loved it!! Fish feeding outside ocean play beach area was a highlight most days 😁

Even when the weather turned grey for a few days, we all still had a great time and activities were available. Room service was superb. Staff regularly made magic happen!

We arrived home feeling pampered refreshed and ready for ‘the real world’. Thank you Vomo for a gorgeous holiday!!

If you are looking for that local Fijian experience. Wayalailai is the place! Beautiful island, beautiful people and amazing local Fijian food. 🫶 Out of all the islands I visited it also had the BEST hike where you can see sunrise & sunset. Great for solo travellers and also perfect for family’s. There is limited phone reception giving you that perfect escape to enjoy the island vibes. You can dive, snorkel, learn weaving, local village tour & more. Highly recommend!!

My daughter and I had a wonderful 6 day adventure at Vomo. It was recommended by friends who assured me that the quality of the food was a standout in Fiji. After 2 years of border closings, we were super excited to head to Vomo.

We were not disappointed. The meet and greet service and transfer was fantastic, though there was a slight wait for the boat. And we will probably never forget the welcome song that greeted us when we arrived at the reality.

Our Hillside Villa was fantastic. While it’s not as convenient as the Ocean Front villas, I loved the privacy and the view across the island out to the sea. The room was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Just a word of warning - there are no TVs (not that we needed it) and basic toiletries so bring your own toothpaste!

We spent 6 blissful days by the pool, enjoying the daily snorkelling trips, the amazing 3 course menus and the kids club was a hit with my daughter. We had 2 spa visits, both of which were great. The island itself is incredible and I loved the privacy of being on a private island with only 100 guests. It felt like a real getaway in the most magical setting possible.

There were some issues with the scheduling of activities at the kids’ club and information could be unreliable. This meant we missed most of the Fijian night show, which was disappointing. I also found that service in the restaurant and pool area was sometimes slow and we had to chase up orders. Perhaps it can be put down to teething problems after a long absence.

In saying all that, the staff were all incredibly lovely and welcoming. They were very helpful in ensuring my daughter was escorted back to the villa after the club or making sure we could get on a snorkelling trip every day. Management also went out of their way to say hello to us. I wanted to thank the staff at Ocean Play in particular. They sorted us out every day with snorkelling gear and we had such fun on each expedition we went on. We highly recommend taking the extra tour to White Rock, as that includes a second snorkel with some “big fish” - the highlight of our trip.

The guests were generally quite friendly. There are many families and also families returning to Vomo so we did sometimes feel like the odd ones out! I didn’t make it to the Rocks bar as was really looking to spend quiet time alone but it’s on the list for next time.

Sadly, while we witnessed many goodbye ceremonies, we didn’t get one ourselves (likely due to the early morning departure). Maybe next time.

We are planning on returning and exploring more of the island next year. It is definitely worthy of a return visit. I think our love for Vomo is just beginning!

Room tip: The hillside villas are great value but the walk up a few times a day was, um, invigorating! Book activities early as they can fill up.

Bula! thanks so much for your review. It sounds like you have discovered some of the magic that VOMO offers for adults as well as for children.

Our apologies we let you down in some areas. The Kids Club activities should have been more succinctly communicated and we are rectifying this.

We have some new team members joining us this week which will ensure service is back to previous high standards.

Its pleasing to read that despite some areas where we fell short, you enjoyed our Fijian hospitality and the beautiful surroundings and facilities of VOMO. It will be our absolute pleasure to welcome you back and we appreciate it if you will give us that opportunity. With warm regards from the VOMO family.

Having traveled to Vomo Island many times over the last 13 years, there is always the memory of how I first discovered this gem of nature in 2009. Therefore it was with great anticipation that I returned recently for my first trip since the world reopened post the advent of COVID-19.

The island remains as beautiful as ever, but in my long experience with the resort I have found that it is slowly losing its Fijian charm and character. In particular, I was looking forward to seeing for the first time, the new Rocks pool area for adults only. No doubt the infinity pool is stunning and the blue water of the sea was reflected in the man-made infinity pool. But a dozen large Bose speakers were spread all around the pool area blasting loud trendy Western music, and it was completely out of character with the sound of the sea around it. Most of the pool area furniture was lacking in Fijian character - that coupled with the loud music made me think that I was back in Sydney at the Establishment on a late Friday night after work.

In the villas, gone are the beautiful dark Fijian shutters of old, but replaced with European style white plantation shutters. Hey, they are nice and expensive no doubt, but not very Fijian.

The new private residences built (and being built) all along the path from Rocks Bar down towards Ocean Play hopefully are not a sign of more development to come - I think if residences are built on the south side of the island, then this will really be a concern for those who want to visit Vomo for exactly what it is - a private island where you can escape from everything back at home.

These views are reflective of a traveler who has visited several times over the last 13 years - so excuse me for being very particular. I did think food quality offered on previous trips was definitely of a higher standard, but given all the supply chain issues the world has been going through due to current COVID disruptions, I would like to think this was the reason why food quality was not on par as prior trips.

But no matter what, my heart will always have a place for Vomo Island, a gem of nature with its amazing lush greenery, beautiful beaches, Little Vomo, and spectacular hill top views. I would say that the yoga deck at the eastern tip of the island was my favorite new addition to the resort since my last visit pre COVID times. And should the island not see more development in future, I will visit again.

Bula Tracy, thank you so much for choosing to return to VOMO after such a long time and for taking the time to write us a review. It is indeed wonderful to be open again and sharing our Fijian hospitality with guests after nearly two years of closure and it's nice to know you still enjoyed the island and its attributes.

However, it appears you felt a little let down in some areas. We thank you for this feedback and reflection. We are sorry you didn't enjoy the contemporary surroundings of the Rocks Bar, Restaurant and Pool, as this is one of Fiji's stand out locations on the western tip of the island, where the best vistas and sunsets can be enjoyed by guests. It was designed to be somewhat of a getaway within VOMO itself. A surprise location that is a little more upbeat, where adults can enjoy a sophisticated space with cabanas, sun loungers and a relaxed vibe that is unlike the quiet deserted beaches that fringe the rest of the island. We've taken note of the comment about music volume ;).

Our contemporary villa interiors were originally designed with those dark timber shutters and whilst very Fijian, they made the villas extremely dark. Following another forced closure the shutters were replaced in 2016 with white shutters. These were installed to give necessary light to the bathrooms, as there is use of lots of natural building materials in the villas such as dark natural stone, metal and extensive use of timbers. The white was needed to keep the villa bathrooms fresh, light and still with a nod to the Pacific.

Whilst there is another private residence almost due for completion, we take on board your comment regarding development. We do believe with just 36 accommodations on our very large 87 hectare island and fewer than 100 guests to enjoy this very large island, there is room for everyone to still find a deserted beach or empty hammock or sun lounger at any time they wish. We don't ever plan to turn VOMO into a large resort and it will remain the only resort on the island.

We are disappointed to read your remarks about the food quality. We are sorry you did not enjoy some of your dining experiences and have consulted our culinary team about where they feel you may have been let down. If you'd like to expand on this, we'd be grateful for more specific feedback to our Culinary Manager at cm@vomofiji.com as to what your experience was, so we can improve on this.

We understand VOMO is a special place for you, as it is with the many who return year on year and we apologise that we have not met your expectations in some areas. We care deeply about our natural environment. We know we are caretakers of some of the most beautiful landscape in the world and we agree VOMO is a gem of nature. Our VOMO family of staff deliver a unique style of luxury that is underpinned by genuine Fijian hospitality. They are the most natural hosts in the world and we believe that whilst the island and its stunning surroundings are what brings you to VOMO, its the family of staff that bring you back. We do hope we can welcome you again in the future.

I guess when a magician does a trick and you can't figure out how or why it happened, it's the sheer unexpected delight that overwhelms you.
Vomo Island is like this. How can a place be so perfect, so well run so effortless and you never see how it's happening!
Firstly it's the magic of the people. You're beguiled by their warmth and charisma. Fijians have an uncanny power to make you relax. And yet their happiness is no act. It's real. Set on a stage of phenomenonal physical beauty which is Vomo Island resort with magnificent accommodation and clear luxury appointments...it's a pretty amazing spectacle. And the food.. abundant, fresh and informed with unique Fijian flavour. Some of the best meals Ive had anywhere in the world. This magic doesn't just happen. The people at the top Gregory and Jason supported by a unique cast of people from Vani, Justin, Siko and so many others who modestly go about their daily routines make every touch human and real. I love travel and I love writing about It, I rarely write reviews, but Vomo is simply next level.

Absolutely fantastic family holiday. The value is the team at Vomo & the island it’s self. The island is in a great position, the water is beautiful, clear & lots of fish. The far side is a completely different view, so lovely to swim and snorkel right off the beach. We’ve stayed at other 5 star resorts in Fiji ~ Vomo has the best position in terms of snorting off the beach, easy swimming & tranquility. Other resorts are often on shared islands, with high level of boat/helicopter traffic. Vomo is quiet, safe and everything you would want in a tropical island. Most importantly, the team at Vomo are outstanding. The managing staff are frequently around, have a great professional relationship with the team.. they really respect and appreciate the value of the Fijian community and Fijian culture. The restaurant staff, the rocks bar, house keeping and grounds maintenance team made our stay so special. The team & kids village made our dream holiday possible. We had a beautiful nanny ‘Lani’ who took such good care of our toddler (who’s never been to daycare & only ever been with a family member) & she had a great time. We quietly looked in on our daughter who was busy playing and singing songs with Lani. It allowed us to have lunch & dinner together without running around. We also voted the spa & went snorkelling which wouldn’t have been possible anywhere else. It’s great the family pool is seperate to the rocks bar, we love that you can feel relaxed with a child in the family area or make the most of the adult time at the rocks. The food was fantastic, good variety & different theme dinners. Sashimi, curries, fine dining style steak, the best fish & chips.. salad.. desserts. We were not disappointed. Cocktails daily (of course) but the drinks at the rocks with the view is perfect. The food for the kids is incredible.. pretty much any you ask for Vomo can accommodate. We ordered our daughter a peanut butter sandwich & a milkshake.. which came out with the crusts cut off, chips and ‘bula’ written in chocolate. Pizza, chips, chicken, vegetables, pancakes.. children are treated like rock stars. I wish Vomo would offer a list of names so I could personally write each persons name to thank them. The team at the spa ~ couples massage was outstanding and the facility it’s self is just special. The man that hosed the Lovo & Kava ceremony, Whyse 1 & 2, beautiful Lani, Tim, Vani, Omi, Jason, Justin, Henry, Va, Brinesh (indulgence manager) the team at kids village + I wish I had every name ~ thank you for making our stay so wonderful. It was the first time we taken our little one anywhere & the entire team made it so easy (especially given the pandemic). The team arranged our transfers, which changed due to the weather but they were on top of times of flights etc. We highly recommend Vomo ~ location, team & the food. Our daughter still still says “Bye bye Fiji.. bye bye Lani” 6 weeks on. We highly recommend & when you consider the value of the inclusions; I actually think it’s excellent value. Thank you Vomo we’ve already planned our return visit. Vinaka ! Ben, Keira & Zara X

Room tip: We booked directly, Vomo arranged our transfers and it was so easy.

We spent 5 nights at Vomo (2A2C) in the beach front family retreat. I was so sad to leave that I’ve already booked a return trip for the kids and myself in September while my husband is away for work elsewhere. The staff (in all areas) are unlike any other I’ve ever met. They are warm, caring, happy and most importantly patient and gentle with my crazy kiddos (3.5yrold girl and 2y old boy). Staff at Vomo are always smiling and always helpful, and nothing is ever too difficult. There collective goal is definitely to make visitors feel loved and at home.

My children were at kids club for at least 6 hours each day and were happy to be there. The staff played with them and loved them as if they were their own. The kids club has a great playground, outdoor area and a movie room which is a huge hit with kids.

The room itself was spacious and beautiful, plus very clean. The complementary home made chocolate cookies were a huge hit with husband and the kids. The only thing I would say is having the bath outside was a bit tricky in terms of mosquitos. My son gets bitten and reacts quite badly so having him as a sitting duck wasn’t great. This is only a reflection of our personal needs and my lack of research. In September we will be staying in the hillside villa which has an internal bath. I loved having the tap just off the balcony between the sand and the room so we could wash the kids down easily without bringing the sand all through the room.

The food at all meals was delightful, dessert was light and delicious, and when one of my family couldn’t find something to suit their taste on the menu, the staff were more than happy to make something that they would eat (chicken schnitzel etc).

Spending time at the adults only Rocks Bar was a highlight. Truly relaxing. The cocktails are amazing and poolside service is on point. The adults only dinners were a fun addition as the menu altered from the other restaurant so provided a nice variety.

I indulged in a facial at the spa and I have to say it’s probably the best I’ve ever had.

From the minute we were met at the airport gate to the moment we were dropped back for our return, everything was perfect. I don’t know how I will manage to holiday anywhere else now.

Bula! What a lovely overview of your stay with us. Whilst Vomo Island is truly spectacular in its beauty, its so often the Vomo family of staff who elevate your stay from being a good experience to fabulous. The kids sound like they had a ball at our Kids Village and with their Baby Butler. We are so pleased you managed some 'adult time' at the Rocks Pool, Beach Bar and Restaurant + our lovely Spa. That ensures that everyone gets what they need from their holiday. We sincerely appreciate your compliments and share these with our team, so thank you for taking the time to write this. Of course, the biggest compliment is that you've booked to return. You'll love the Hillside Villas. They have such a pretty outlook, are very private and still superbly well located, with just a toddle down the hillside path to the restaurant, pool, beach and Kids Village. We look forward to welcoming you back. Warmest regards the VOMO Family
