Beautiful island paradise complete with pets

Review of Matamanoa Island Resort
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Apr 2024
Booked thru Luxury Escapes. We stayed in Villa 53 with a beautiful sea view and plunge pool. Accommodation was very nice, outdoor shower and day bed, servicing was great.
You cannot buy a singular glass of wine, you must buy a bottle, which is kept at the bar. The food overall was disappointing, however the beef is very nice. Great breakfast. Flat white $12.50.
The biggest negative is the local bird noise at night. At 3.30am every morning it would start and go on for 2 hours. Our friends, in Villa 56, had it all night as the birds were nesting under the floorboards. It's an island paradise, just be aware you will have this to contend with if you travel around this time.
The band played every night and were amazingly talented. All the staff were exceptional.

This is our second time to Matamanoa Island Resort. We truly enjoyed our experience and look forward to returning again. The resort is top notch and the staff are friendly and accommodating, as well as seasoned professionals from throughout the island resort community and also locals from the nearby island, Tavua, which has a long standing relationship with the resort.

This is overall a cute little island and not bad resort.

The staff are overall good and food is reasonable for a remote island.

We booked through Luxury Escapes and had our own villa (52) with a splash pool and facing the sea. So far pretty good. The main issue for us was that at night our villa became the breeding ground for the Matamanoa bird. They literally lived under our house. The sounds they make when breeding are horrendous! Like small howling wolves alternating with sounds of crying babies. It was relentless every night.

We googled the bird after the first nights interrupted sleep and found that these particular villas we were staying in were traditionally not let when the birds were mating (November to May).

That also explained why we initially had no neighbours.

We spoke to staff that laughed and said that young boys sometimes “clean up” the birds and put them in garbage bags. We were not going to pursue that option.

In addition to this the pool pumps that keeps the splash pools clean are on 24 /7. As they have no housing and sits between every villa this was not a peaceful setting.

A peaceful stay is the essence of a Luxury Escape and this villa during this time failed that very basic test.

Room tip: Make sure to avoid booking the sea side villas during mating season (November -May)

I spent 4 nights here at the end of the wet season…and whilst unfortunately it was VERY wet, everything else about my experience was amazing. The staff here work so incredibly hard every day to make sure everyone is looked after and they deserve real recognition! From the huge physical effort of carrying everyone’s luggage from the boat, welcoming every guest on to the island with a welcome song, and making the effort to learn the names of guests to make it a more personal experience, I only have positive things to say about the team here!

This is a 4* resort which 100% lives up to expectations and so much more. I stayed in a Beachfront Bure which was beautiful and kept spotlessly clean every day. When the sun came out fleetingly the pool area and view out to the ocean was stunning. The dinner menu changes every evening, and whilst it might not be Michelin star (and nor should it be!) it more than delivers to a very good standard and is incredibly good value.

Don’t let any negative reviews put you off…I’d return in a heartbeat. This is relaxed island life at its best.

Amaaazing! What a beautiful piece of paradise. Only good things to say about this place! The food was sooo delicious. The beachfront bure was stunning with gorgeous ceilings. Highly recommend upgrading to beachfront with plunge pool as we did - such a lush view to relax in the pool! Cocktails - yum!
The staff were incredibly welcoming and lovely, let us check out late. The bed was comfyyyy. So many activities on offer!
We will be back one day - for longer, not in rainy season tho cos we want more beaut days like the one we caught in the pics. Vinaka!!

Room tip: Upgrade to a beachfront Bure with plunge pool!!

A genuine, authentic island experience.
Remember this is an island and you are on holiday to relax. There will be real wildlife noises and a few bugs (not many at all) - it isn’t Disney…thank god!
Friendly staff, great rooms (we stayed in the so called basic garden room but it was terrific) and very clean facilities.
The negative reviews elsewhere must be borne from completely unrealistic expectations - this was a wonderful piece of paradise that we enjoyed tremendously. We will be back if at all possible

Room tip: This is a real life island- not Disney!!
