We've stayed at Lawson Rock three times, and every visit has been superb. Angelfish 203 was our "home" for our last two visits, and our review from last year remains the same...that is, excellent. From Lawson Rock staff, to location, to the unit itself, beach, reef, security, parking, pools, landscape, etc., all is spot on. In short, Angelfish 203 has been one of the very best rentals we have used anywhere in almost 25 years of Caribbean travels.
This is a beautiful condo in very good condition. It has a wonderful ocean-view from the main living area and from one of the bedrooms. There are basically two master bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, but one bedroom does have a balcony and a better view. Both bedrooms have huge bathrooms with large tubs and showers. The third bath has a shower. There was construction going on on the pool in the unit below us the entire week we were there, so we were not able to sit outside during the day because of the noise. The upstairs pool for this unit is nice, but it is walled-off, so you cannot see the ocean from the top patio unless you stand up and look over the concrete rail. Those were the main negatives we experienced. The condominium complex has a lovely garden and good security. We enjoyed being in Sandy Bay rather that West End or West Bay because it is quieter. There is a very good dive shop right next to the complex. If you want to snorkel or dive, you really should make arrangements with a dive shop, because the reef is pretty far out from the beach here. They do have kayaks which you can use, but it would be a little tricky to anchor them for snorkeling. Most of the beaches on Roatan have thick eel grass from the beach out to the beginning of the reef, so they really are not great for swimming. I suppose that is why there are so many swimming pools. The beach at West Bay is nice for swimming, but it is crowded with tourists and vendors, so it is not very relaxing. Don't go when there is a cruise ship in town if you can help it. If you have to go on a cruise day, go later in the day. We were very comfortable in the anglefish unit of Lawson Rock in Sandy Bay. The mattresses are a bit firm, but the AC worked great, as did the generator, which kicked in a few times during our stay. It is not loud. The power on Roatan is a little iffy at times, so this is a big plus. This unit also has a water purifier, so you can drink the water, but we still purchased water from the grocery. One warning, the sand gnats on Roatan are murderous, and they are out 24 hours a day, so bring your bug spray or buy some when you get there. Prices at Eldon's grocery are the same as stores in the US, so do not feel you have to bring everything with you.
As other reviewers have offered, Angelfish 203 is truly a delight. Location directly on the beach is wonderful. Views from the private pool, private decks, master bedroom and more are truly memorable. Decor is sophisticated. Central AC is efficient, quiet and equable throughout.
On lesser notes, the few downsides to the condo are: located on the second floor, mandating many steps with groceries, to the beach etc. View from the second bedroom is mostly of the adjacent condo, and lastly...both beds leave something to be desired unless you're a real firm mattress person. While there are three TV's (with DVD players) available (one each bedroom, one living room), there is no central sound system of any type...kind of an oversight appreciating cost and other super amenities.
We had a wonderful 2 week stay at Lawson Rock – Angelfish 203. The view from the condo was amazing. The community is very safe with two guards at all time on site. They are very friendly and always helping out with luggage and grocery. The apartment is even more beautiful than the pictures. Everything is clean and very well maintained. The pool on the roof was our little refuge at the end of the afternoon. This unit also has filtered water and a very useful ice maker, two lovely surprises.
I do recommend renting a car. Go to the West End the see the sunset. Take a day at West Bay on the beach. On the East Side we had lunch at the Serena. Lawson Rock is very well situated on the island. You will see a lot of guards everywhere. They are working hard to keep the island safe, they do not want it to become like the continent.
For grocery we add problems finding everything we wanted at the beginning. We went at the wrong places. Do not waste your time, go to Eldon’s. Plaza Mar is less expensive but choices are limited. The Bulk Gourmet has high quality meats and refined grocery. We continued to the next village and found a fish store (name?) it was recommended to us by the Bulk Gourmet. We found fresh fish and hugged lobster tails.
The beach at Lawson Rock is cleaned up regularly, they really try to limit damaged of insects. Not much beach flea on that beach but they are mosquitos on the site. I do attract unwanted insect more than the average. Even if I would put a repellent cream in the morning and spray regularly in the day, I was eaten alive. The problem is on the whole island.
We had a chef one night; this was arranged trough reception and Detour Roatan. We were 5 and the charge for a Seafood Soup, Calamari, Lobster and Key Lime Pie was 231$. A royal treatment at a more then fair price. Five Stars to Jenny our chef!
We went deep sea fishing with Ruthless Roatan Charters. It was an amazing excursion. We do recommend. Salty Mango for lunch, you must try. Jet Ski Tour with La Casa Roatan, located on the beach. The best way to see the island is from the sea. Kevin was our guide. We really enjoyed this tour. We went scuba diving and took diving experimentation with Blue Island Diver. Excellent service and also at walking distance (on the beach) of Lawson Rock.
Lawson Rock – Angelfish 203 is a wonderful installation very well situated. We highly recommend it and we will certainly return there when returning to the beautiful island of Roatan.
The property is awesome. Great accommodations, luxurious ans spacious. The rooftop pool is heaven for night swims under the stars. The two outdoors terraces are comfortable and offer breath taking views! The double sun deck in the sea is a marvelous place to swim, relax and enjoy fabulous sunsets! Great staff around to help with anything we need. Great 5 stars!!!
