My Review is for the SISA restaurant(s) in Otavalo. SISA is a 4 story building located on Calle Calderon between Sucre and Bolivar in Otavalo, right next to the Hotel Coraza, approximately 3 blocks from the indian market and a block from the main park. The Hotel Coraza is a deal at $15 per person, private bath, TV, etc., and what's best of all, SISA is a few steps away. There are basically 3 restaurants there in the SISA building, as well as shops for gourmet handicrafts and a bookstore, as well as a movie theater that shows many international films. The place is one of the coolest in Otavalo and even if you are not looking for an excellent lunch or dinner or snack, the place is definitely worth a visit. On the first floor, as you walk to the back, there is a 'wine bar' with cocktails and snacks and sandwiches as well as a good strong wi-fi internet, bring your laptop.
On the second floor, they have a full restaurant for lunch and dinner and at lunchtime the place is actually full with upscale locals and tourists who wish to have a reasonably priced delicious and fresh lunch, for about $5-7, some entrees are less. They have vegetarian food as well as all kinds of meats, fish and seafood.....try the Mushrooms Tempura, or the Corvina in Shrimp Sauce! The wine selection is one of the best in town with European as well as South American wines. On the third floor there are pastries, but not your regular run of the mill ones....the best brownies, fruit and chocolate cakes, apple and other exotic fruit pies, tarts, an array of cakes not found anywhere else; perhaps at any one given time well over a dozen freshly baked selections, again cocktails, organic coffees and expressos and wines can be ordered there. When I have friends visiting we usually have at least one, if not more meals at SISA on the 2nd floor. I have had lunches and dinners there, dozens of times. The service is excellent and is provided by patient Otavalo Indigenous people. SISA is owned by Washo Maldonado who is an Otavalen Indigenous man. The last I had heard they were planning to serve pizza in the first floor wine bar. I am anxiously awaiting!
