The ancient temple is so precious that almost all areas are not refurbished. The tranquil atmosphere makes us feel calm and peaceful. The untouched structure withstands the tests of time and weather. This ancient temple is not big but definitely worth a visit.

NB the spelling we have is Sofukuji, but TA has it "Sh...".

Beautiful Temple. Except for your time contemplating the Buddhas it will not take long to stroll through the temple grounds. It is noted for its entrance gate but we found the Buddha statues more interesting.

Take the tram to the end of the line at Shokakuji-Shita then walk a couple of minutes.

Easy to reach by streetcar, this temple is must when visiting Nagasaki. There is small entrance fee, but it's definetly worth it. Take stroll around temple grounds and soak in the atmosphere.

Shofukuji is a wonderful temple, all hoary and ancient and moss covered – and untouristed and free. We climb up through an ancient gate, arrive at a curious edifice that serves as a second gate and a temple as well because of a shine in the center with Maitreya Buddha on the front side and the patron deity protecting the temple on the back, evidently unique in this double-function. The grounds and gardens of the temple and indeed the buildings themselves are not well attended, and it is unfortunate because we find the place utterly charming.

This is one of several temples stretched along the hillside and the loveliest and quietest. From the road there are several staircases to climb but once through the entrance it's compact and lovely to look at. There is a small board explaining its history, there will probably be no one around and you can have the place to yourself.
