This hotel is in an excellent spot, just over the bridge from the East exit of the station. There is no name in English to give you a clue it is the hotel you are looking for, but once you cross the bridge go down the stairs, or in the lift if you have luggage, go past the 7 Eleven and just a bit further along the road is the entrance to the hotel. We were able to check in on arrival, which was around 12 pm rather than having to wait for the customary 3 pm. The hotel and rooms are very tired, but clean and comfortable providing all you need for your stay. Good value for money. The bus station is just across the road. Most of the action and life is the other side of the station, therefore this is a quieter place to be.The reception staff speak better English than most hotels we stayed in. There is a restaurant if you don't want to go looking for your evening meal if you are tired after sight seeing or have just arrived. If you are happy to venture out there are many restaurants the other side of the station. In the station is a very good Tourist Information.

Room Tip: We always ask for a higher floor to avoid road noise

Had to agree with a previous reviewer that it was ludricous for a hotel (and there are 2 of this chain on either side of the Nagano station) to not have the hotel name in Roman numerals if they cater to foreign tourists. Took time to locate this one even though you can see it across the walkway.
Other than that the queen room had lots of space almost to North American standards and had enough space for a small table and chair. They also provided a luggage rack and closet space. The room was brightly lit and the bed was firm and pillows hard. Adequate space in the washroom so you can turn around without hitting anything.
Breakfast was normally not included in the rate.

Location: As the name suggests, this hotel is located on the East Exit of Nagano Station. There is a bridge that goes across the street (with elevator to ground), making it very easy to drag luggage from train station to hotel. It's a 20-30 minute walk from hotel to Zenkoji Temple. There are lots of restaurant options on the Northwest Exit of the JR Nagano station, but not on the East Exit.
Room: It was a small room, but typical by Japanese standard.
Breakfast: It was alright.
Overall: Compared with hotels on the busier Northwest Exit, this hotel is located on the quiet side, but still right next to station and pretty convenient for the purpose of tourism and train excursions. Also, it's more affordable than hotels on the other side. I would recommend this hotel for budget travelers.
Btw: Previous reviews point out that it may be challenging to find the location of this hotel (because there are two Sunroute Hotels in Nagano, one on each exit). So I recommend printing out the hotel location (Google Map).

Hotel Sunroute Nagano-Higashiguchi is located on the East exit of JR Nagano station. It is within 3min walking distance from an overhead bridge (pathway) that linked to the station. Hotel is conveniently located right across the bus station 21-26 that you can take a bus to Hakuba ski field or snow money onsen.

Hotels rooms are small but comfortable and clean. Buffet breakfast has wide selection and delicious.

Hotel staff are friendly and helpful.

I would recommend this hotel for its convenient location that easily accessible to most sightseeing places by JR trains, buses and on foot. It is also accessible to convenient stores, eateries and shopping arcade.

The Sunroute Nagano Higashiguchi is one of 2 branches in Nagano - both opposite the new Nagano Station. We were able to book a reasonably priced 3 person family room, something of a relative rarity in Japan. Reception was nice with customary Japanese friendliness and efficiency. The room has a bit of a 90s vibe going on, but it was clean and well maintained. The third bed was an opened up couch, but comfortable enough for me. For some reason the windows were permanently fogged over, but not a biggie.
The breakfast wasn't included and a bit pricey (1000 yen for 3 persons) but was nice. Staff there was also friendly.

Room Tip: Our three-person family room had a great view on the station and the city!
