We are a gay couple on our honeymoon and we booked a cooking class and market tour last minute and were met by Satsuki who was an excellent guide/cook with excellent English skills. The added tour of the Nishiki Market was well worth it if you've never been... We wanted to buy some chef's knives and chopsticks and Satsuki helped us do this and helped us get them engraved too. She gave us a treat of our picking too and we tried Fugu which was a neat thing to say we did... The cooking studio was perfect and there was another assistant there (I can't remember his name) who was wonderful and also had excellent English skills. The dishes we made were fun, and they even tailored our dishes to our preferences. They also gave us sake and after emailed us photos of our time with them plus recipes... Highly recommended!!

My wife and I had a wonderful time at our cooking class! We did the 3-hour course plus a sake tasting. Satsuki and Shinji were great teachers, both helping us with the techniques and telling us more about the foods and Japanese cooking in general. There's plenty of hands-on work from chopping, grinding seeds, mixing everything together, and even learning how to cut carrots into fun flower shapes!

One of our favorite parts was just chatting with our two instructors about what life is like in Japan, what people eat (both at home and at restaurants), and lots of other information. I felt like we got really immersed in the culture, which was exactly what we were looking for.

During the class, we made:
* dashi (a base broth for everything else)
* miso soup
* takikomi gohan (steamed rice with vegetables)
* gommae (spinach and sesame salad)
* kinpiragobou (a mix of vegetables sliced thin)
* nikujaga (a kind of Japanese take on a meat-and-potatoes soup/stew)

For the sake tasting, each of us tried 3 different sakes (which really let us try 6 total since we shared glasses).

Of course, we got to eat all the food at the end. Very delicious; we'll be sure to make some of them at home (they sent us the recipes afterwards).

Mid August My wife and I were fortunate enough to get a last minute reservation. We could not be happier with May and her course. We learned to prepare 5 separate dishes from start to finish, each fully hands on with full explanations of the ingredients and why things were done in a particular fashion. The course was very reasonably priced, the food delicious. Our instructor May was absolutely charming. Her English was excellent, her knowledge of the dishes top notch. Our conversations covered many topics beyond the food. The facility was very nice and I would certainly go again.

Doing this class has been one of the best things I've done in Japan so far. Not only because of the food (that was great!), but also because it was a great way to learn about the japanese culture and manners. Thank you very much!
