“Beautifully detailed, comfortable flat”

We stayed in the upper flat at Gion House in May, 2014. The location was on a very quiet street, but just around the corner from the historic main street of the Gion geisha district. We saw geisha in the evening on several occasions-- moving quickly to their destinations to avoid prying eyes (and cameras). Gion House is beautifully decorated and furnished, with the kind of details that make it obvious that it is designed for the owner's use, not just as a money-making vacation rental. While the decor was Japanese, the furniture included tables, chairs, a sofa and a queen bed to make it comfortable for Westerners. Convenient extras include a microwave/toaster, a drip coffeemaker and a full size combo washer/dryer. We used the rooftop patio clothesline to finish drying our clothes; otherwise the patio staircase was too steep for regular use. We appreciated that this rental came with soaps and shampoos, as well as paper towels and starter amounts of a few kitchen basics such as laundry detergent, cooking oil, tea and coffee. While the staircase to get to the flat is on the steep side by American standards, the entire flat is on one level, which seems rare in Kyoto rental apartments. We highly recommend Gion House and would (and in fact, already have) recommend it to a friend.

A nice place to stay in a very rich visiting places area, the appartment was very clean and well equiped. The information file is very useful, with maps, a good library with books about Kyoto and Japan. Junko from Another World was very helpfull and quick responding when we lost the wifi connection. The small terrasse on the roof is a good surprise.

“Fantastic Lodging in Gion. Everything it promised and more!”

We went to Kyoto to visit our son who is studying abroad at Ritsumeikan University. We wanted a house where we could relax and catch up when we weren't sight seeing. The Gion House is beautifully appointed and so clean! The extras in the house make this property extra special. The heated floors in the hallways and shower were appreciated since we visited in cold weather. Curtis has so much useful information in the house. Junko was a pleasure to deal with concerning questions and checking in, etc. The location in Kyoto is perfect.

We hope to visit Kyoto again and when we do, we will without a doubt stay at the Gion House. If you're going to Kyoto, our family would highly recommend this property. Thanks Curtsi!

“Cosy, quiet, very comfortable and just perfectly located Kyoto hideaway.”

The property description and photos and glowing reviews don't do this little gem justice. This was my fourth visit to Kyoto over 30 years and I can confidently say that the location is peerless for days or weeks of ambles through this wonderful city. Beautifully presented, wonderful service. Hidden down a very quiet lane way it is within walking distance of four different geisha quarters and probably Kyoto's most stunning temples and walks.

Trains, buses, supermarkets and even Starbucks all very accessible once you walk a few blocks, not to mention hundreds and hundreds of restaurants and tea houses.

If Kyoto is Japan the The Gion House is Kyoto.

Unreservedly recommended.

Liked best: Absolutely ideal location and smart modern but distinctively Japanese design
Liked least: Faint but audible drums and gongs from temple next door could disturb light sleepers at 6am
