Walk straight out of Kyoto station main entrance and across the main street , straight ahead about 10-15 min walk and you will come to the large temple complex and grounds, Huge impressive Chinese style gate ,lets you into the large open courtyard and the massive and very architecturally designed main temple/shrine , there are other buildings around the temple grounds , but the main temple/shrine is quite an impressive building, shes off as in virtually all temple/shrines if you want to go inside ,the large and colourful worship hall , the hall of the Amida Buddha . Love the dragon water feature in front of the temple , well worth a look .

Impressive building near the city center of Kyoto.
We went here twice and both times it wasn’t busy.
Great to have a rest inside the temple (shoes off) and take a moment to look around and see the amazing lots of work it must have cost to make something like this.
Outside it would be much nicer if the change the pebbles for more grass.

Only a small section of the temple complex is open to the public. Be sure to pick up the free pamphlet at the Information Center that describes the must see areas.

The two main buildings are up a set of stairs after removing one's shoes. Plastic bags are available so that you can take your shoes along as you explore. No videos or photos allowed in the Prayer Hall.

In the covered section linking the two main buildings, you will find the famous "hair rope" and a sled used to transport large items. The ladies restroom is opposite the sled, the men's room is downstairs. Plastic slippers are provided inside the restroom.

If you are in the area, this temple is worth stopping by for half an hour. It is usually very quiet unless there is a special event in progress.

This temple is walking distance from Kyoto station and just opposite you'll find a beautiful garden. The entrance is free and there are few empty halls to visit. The architecture is amazing and has nice pictures. They'll make you take your shoes off but provide bags to carry them.
