This temple is walking distance from Kyoto station and just opposite you'll find a beautiful garden. The entrance is free and there are few empty halls to visit. The architecture is amazing and has nice pictures. They'll make you take your shoes off but provide bags to carry them.

Interesting to visit this temple and the rival next door (Nishi Honganji) rigth away.
You can see and compare. They are very open to teach you with a good environment for meditating/praying. Maybe at some points you can feel that there is a little bit of propaganda (?).

This temple-the EAST ( = higashi)- Honganji-temple was built 11 years afters its sister, the west ( nishi ) -Honganji and is the head temple of the Otani faction of Jodo-Shin Buddhism.
The Goeido Main Hall is Kyoto's largest wooden structure and dedicated to Shrinan, founder of the sect.
This hall is 76 m. long, 56 m. wide and 38 m. high and has golden chandeliers and 90 wooden pillars. You can sit here on the tatami anf "feel" the sanctity.
The Amidado hall, almost as large is dedicated to Amida Buddha.
On the grounds you can also admire a huge bronzen bell .
You enter and leave the grounds through the founders gate = Goei-do-mon" gate.
Admire here the ceiling and the massive wooden gate-doors !

While walking to our hotel from Kyoto Station we passed the Higashi Honganji. We did not realize what this place was until we checked later. We were impressed by the size of the complex and the structures themselves. We did not go inside but it would be somewhere to explore if we get back to Kyoto.

When we were in the viewing platform of the Kyoto Tower we saw this imposing structure, so next day we decided to visit. Well worth half an hour to see some astonishing craftsmanship in the beautiful Buddhist temple. And just a few minutes walk from Kyoto Station and Century Hotel.
