Sticky Rice is such a great organisation and I wouldn't hesitate to travel with them again, or recommend to anyone else heading to Borneo's beautiful Sabah.

I travelled to Borneo with a friend in April 2018, and right from our initial enquiry to waving farewell, the whole team was amazing. We had the perfect tailored experience of Kota Kinabalu mountain climbing, hot springs, waterfalls, rainforest trekking and wildlife spotting in Danum Valley, and the

The ‘concise’ bit:

Transport - Superb. We were transferred to DVFC in a very nice mini bus with a/c. Our return trip was by 4x4, again with a/c. The journey is a little bumpy along gravel tracks. Both drivers drove safely.

Accommodation - Excellent. We stayed in a Rest House room. Very clean and very comfortable. 2 single beds, tea/coffee facilities, private en suite, ceiling fan, rechargeable portable desk fan, rechargeable desk lantern. No hot showering facility. DVFC power is turned off between 11pm-7am.

Food - Very good. Buffet style B/L/D. Breakfast is a choice of cereal, noodles, eggs, beans and fruit. Lunch and dinner is a choice of rice/noodles, vegetables and choice of meat and fruit. Fridge is available to store own drinks if required. Free drinking water and tea/coffee available at all times.

Activities - Amazing. Day time trekking (leech socks are provided), night time trek, optional night time safari, optional sunrise viewpoint transfer. Guides have radios and first aid with them at all times. There are different trekking routes varying in difficulty.

The ‘personal’ bit;

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3D2N stay at DVFC. It was possibly one of the best experiences we have had on our travels. The accommodation, some may say, is basic. But we found it to be perfectly comfortable and far from being so - the ‘jungle experience’ with a little bit of luxury, in fact.

We saw a wide variety of wildlife and flora and fauna. Fantastic few days, the memories of which we will treasure forever.

Our guide was Atteh Razis, an exceptional ambassador for naturism, ecology and generally being a top guy. Knowledgeable and professional, but always with the personal and enthusiastic touch, we thoroughly enjoyed our discussions about the jungle, wildlife and Malaysian culture with him. He went above and beyond what I normally expect from a guide.

Contacted Sticky Rice after reading good reviews. From the beginning they were perfect. Eva emailed us a few options and helped us decide on the best trip for us. She replied to emails promptly and was always helpful without pressurising us to book.
The service when we arrived was professional and friendly. The driver picked us up on time from Lahad Datu airport and took us to the DVFC. The stay was incredible. We saw orangutans up close as well as gibbons, snakes, tarantulas, red leaf monkeys, a tarsier and others I can't even count. Our guide was Mac and he was also excellent. Always friendly and enthusiastic and knows so much about the wildlife.
We chose to stay in dorms (cheaper) which were basic and certainly not luxurious. Expect bugs, bunk beds, cold showers, no mosquito net and dirty pillows. Definitely worth it for us, and there are more expensive options which I assume are a bit nicer.
The only complaint I could have is that Sticky Rice are a bit expensive and be ready to spend more when you arrive including RM106 to bring a camera in and extras including the night drive and sunrise trip.
Overall, the Danum Valley trip is an experience of a life time and, although not the cheapest option in Borneo, Sticky Rice are definitely worth it for the service and the extra effort they put in to make sure you have a great trip.

Hi Christopher B,

Thank you for such detailed feedback about your trip to Danum with Eva and Mac. Your thoughtful and descriptive feedback reaffirms that we are heading in the right direction, every guide and staff provides the level of passion and dedication of ensuring a meaningful adventure for our guests. We are glad that you have seen a number of animals species within a short span of time in the forest and not to mention the swift responses from Eva. You were right about the accommodation choice, it is basic and not luxurious, however, the dorms also comes with mosquito nets on windows and with regards to the additional expenses, these are fees paid directly to the centre itself as they are running it with the support from visiting guests. It maybe steep but the experience is worthwhile.

Again, thank you for your kind words and Danum Valley holds a special place in our heart and agreeing with you it is an experience of a life time. Should you come over to this part of the world again, we would be happy to hear from you next time! Till then travel well.

Impeccable service from start to finish. The travel agent helped us tailor our trip from the moment we sat foot on Borneo.
Our guide was very nice and had almost always answers to all our questions. The river cruise on the Kinabatangan was my absolute favorite! And I also recommend a stay at Paganakan Dii, for a close jungle encounter and super friendly staff.
