A bit of luxury after the wildlife lodges!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Sept 2024via mobile
I feel a little shallow rating this 5*, as I feel a good deal of my satisfaction of The Meridian came from the feeling of pure luxury after the wildlife lodges! The room, bed, pillows all very comfortable; great shower. It’s in a downtown location & we enjoyed wandering around the food markets opposite the hotel - biggest fish market we’ve ever seen.
It was a wet evening & we’d been travelling all day, so decided to eat in the hotel. Word of caution - the main restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol - we didn’t realise this, so were a bit miffed but, the manager used his initiative & offered us a room just outside of the restaurant, where we’d seen what looked like a conference party earlier. I had sea bass (with a glass of wine!) & can hand on heart say it was the best I’ve had in probably 40 years!

Dear jan59Essex,

Thank you very much for your kind review! We are thrilled to hear that your recent stay with us was enjoyable, especially after your wildlife adventures. We are also delighted to know that you found your room, bed, and pillows comfortable - there’s nothing like sinking into plush pillows after a day of exploration! It's wonderful to hear that you enjoyed strolling around the city and exploring the local markets, all from the convenience of our hotel's location. We are also pleased to know that our associate went above and beyond to ensure you had a memorable dining experience, especially with the sea bass, which you described as the best you've had in 40 years!

We appreciate your feedback regarding your experience at our restaurant. We would like to clarify that our main restaurant is halal certified, which means that alcohol is not served in order to maintain our commitment to halal practices. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We appreciate your understanding and are glad to hear that our manager was able to accommodate you in a nearby room.

Thank you once again for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back for another enjoyable stay, hopefully soon!

Kind regards,
Nurqamarina

I had a wonderful experience during my stay at Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu. One of the front desk receptionists, Chee Pau Wah(which in picture), was exceptionally friendly and provided excellent service. He was very attentive to my needs and ensured that all my requirements were met.

While the hotel does appear a bit old, the refurbishment has definitely brought it back to life, making the overall experience great. The breakfast was also a highlight, offering a wide variety of delicious options to start the day.

Highly recommended!

What makes a hotel? A hotel should be warm and welcoming. The staff should reflect this. This hotel has this. From the moment we stepped out of the taxi, we felt this. The staff are truly amazing. Always ready to chat about your day. Special mention to Miss R (I'm not sure about the spelling of her name) at reception. We were extremely impressed by her professionalism. Also, a special mention goes to Anna, the manager of the main breakfast area. Such a pleasure to see her every morning. I didn't get the name of the lady in the club lounge with braces. She was amazing. It's also nice when the general manager stops to chat with the guests.

What let's this hotel down is the room we stayed in. Bi-level room needs attention. The downstairs toilet tiles looked as if they were about to fall off the wall. A place to put a hand towel would be great. The stairs need some sort of light for the night. My husband slipped on the stairs twice.

As I said to the staff, we will be back. It really is a good hotel.

Room tip: Bi-level rooms give you a choice of food and extra services.

Beautiful hotel - massive room - we could not believe how big it actually was.

The staff are so attentive and do such a good job. They really take care of you.

Very central - so easy to walk everywhere. So much to see and do in the area. The malls, the restaurants, the spas! We had a great massage at Borneo family massage - to the left when you exit the front.

The pool area was lovely as well… pool a bit cold tho! But nice to cool down.

Definitely would book here again - amazing hotel.

Best location in Kota Kinabalu. Walking distance to Gaya Street (where all the good coffee shops & cafes are), Asia Mall, & Imagi Mall. The Night Market & Handicraft shops are across the street.
The staff here are super helpful and friendly. Rocky is the guy to go to. He's the concierge guy that helped us book transportation services at a reasonable price. Talked to us about tours, recommended where to eat, what to see, etc. He's the man you need to see if you need anything! Give him a raise.
The only downside I have to say about the hotel is the breakfast. The breakfast selection is huge, but the quality is below average, even the coffee was poor. Go elsewhere for breakfast or coffee.

Room tip: If you're too lazy to walk, order Grab because it's super cheap to get around. Lots of shopping around.

The hotel was a great spot with beautiful ocean views. We had tons of food options nearby, which was super convenient. The staff at the front desk were super friendly and made us feel right at home.

The rooms were clean and cozy, but our room was right next to the meeting hall, which made us a little nervous about security. Overall, though, it was a really nice place to stay.
