My wife, 2 year old daughter and I had a wonderful stay at Zabouan recently. Many thanks to the staff for their warm hospitality and exceedingly high level of service. We had a city-view room with 'western beds' and a separate tatami area - very clean and comfortable. We opted for half-board which included breakfast and dinner - I would recommend this option but do check directly with hotel's website as there are different levels/ prices which most booking agents don't tell you about. The food is a big reason, I believe, people stay here; it's fantastic - organic, seasonal and lovingly prepared and served. Sea bream and tofu feature prominently in the menu and do not disappoint. Another reason to stay are the baths/ spa which are very much a part of the culture of this hotel. In-room massage packages are also available.

The hotel itself is nestled in the mountains - there are no restaurants, bars or shops you can walk to. As a result you can be sure it is quiet and peaceful. Transportation can be a bit of an issue if, like us, you don't have a car but the hotel has a daily shuttle at 10am to Kofu Station which returns at 4:30pm and the staff was very helpful to arrange a car or assist with plans for daily outings as needed.

From Kofu station, many of the sights within Yamanashi are easily reached. We stayed 5 nights and used Kofu as a base to explore the surrounding areas. The city view room in my opinion is worth the extra money as I think without it you really have no view, if that's important to you. Hard to say when the best time to visit may be as I'm sure every season has something to offer. There is fresh fruit picking nearby Summer through late Autumn. Leaves change color from late October which must be beautiful as the hills are ever-present and I would imagine the area around Kofu would be lovely with the spring blossoms. Ultimately, however, it was the food, the thoughtfulness of the staff and generally the warm hospitality that will leave us a lasting fond memory of our stay. Many thanks to the Zabouan team!

PS. There is no wi-fi/ internet in the rooms so if you need your devices connected, plan ahead.

If you want to relax in a peaceful natural environment, this is the right ryokan for you. Being on a hill in the forest, this traditional hotel offers a relaxing environment with excellent Japanese traditional food, onsen (Japanese spas), and the choice of traditional Japanese or western style beds. The only drawback is that there is no wifi in the rooms and that the outside onsen don't have a place to wash, only the one inside (in a different place) has a wash place.
