Hodakaso-sangetsu is nestled within the Okuhida Onsen Village area and is without a doubt, the best experience we've had this entire trip. The facade is that of a modern hotel building, but the rooms are still very authentically japanese ryokan rooms.

We got there by car, and the moment we parked, the staff were there to receive us and were there to attend to our every need. We were escorted up to our rooms, and taught to put on our yukatas for our onsen experience. They have two onsens within the facility - one in the other wing, separate onsens with both indoor and outdoor onsens, and one OUTSIDE the building, a short walk across, with mixed and female onsens. if you're deathly afraid of the cold they even provide thick yukatas outer wears and snow boots for that short maybe... 5 m walk across.

we opted for the half board option and the meals we had(breakfast and dinner) was impeccable. i don't eat beef and i didn't inform them before hand(my bad) and they immediately changed my set meal to a seafood one. they also have chinese-speaking staff on hand to explain to you the dishes served.

would definitely come here again.

We had visited this ryokan few year ago and we had a very pleasant experience here! We were looking forwards to come back again, but we were quite disappointed after this visit.

The outdoor onsen and the room standard are still same as our last visit, but their food taste has become from good to bad. They used to serve very good beef, but not this time anymore. And the rest of the food all not nice. We won’t come back again!

This is a Onsen (Hot Spring) hotel, which usually include breakfast and dinner in the price. This property is located in the mountain range that is referred to as Japanese Alps in the Okuhida area. This is a large property, besides the usual facilities in the main building, they also have an outdoor mixed bath (genderless) off site that is 10 minutes walk away. This hotel had absolutely fantastic service. We drove into their reception parking area, immediately attendants came out greeted us and took all our luggage into the hotel. After presenting our ID's, we were seated at the large reception area and offered tea and dessert to relax while they prepare the paperwork. The reception area has a large window looking out in to the koi (carps) pond with a mini water fall, very peaceful. The receptionist came over to our table after 15 minutes bearing the firms to sign, decided on our preferred dining time and we were given our room key. We had reserved a large Japanese style tatami room, it is nicely decorated with good care and upkeep. Our luggages are already delivered into our room, great! The facility has great onsen, after soaking, we were ready for the highlight of the stay, dinner. The dinner is kaiseki style with the local famous Hida Beef as it main anchor dish, all the other dishes were executed well with local ingredients, the servers are very attentive and the food delicious. Next morning after having a wonderful Jaoanese style breakfast, we took our luggages to the reception, and proceed to check out and settle the bill. When we were done, our car was already retrieved by the staff, the luggage loaded and our shoes which they took for storage lined up at the entrance waiting for us. We were extremely impressed and will hope to one day return to enjoy the facility again.

Our stay at the Hodakaso Sangetsu was perhaps the most interesting and amazing part of our trip to Japan. The hotel is an hour's drive from the Takayama Train Station(a taxi will set you back 16,000 yen or about 160 dollars), and about an hour and 20 minutes by the bus from the bus station adjacent to the Takayama train station. However, the hour long drive is certainly worth it for the amazing views and amenities that this hotel offers. Even though the staff did not speak a single word of English(other than hello), and there was only one Chinese speaking waitress in the restaurant, the service at this hotel was phenomenal. The Japanese housekeeper who showed us to our room was excited and happy to show us how to wear the Japanese robes and use the light fixtures in the room and the staff were very patient with us when we tried to ask questions about local area attractions! The hotel rooms were immaculate and our room slept 4 people in futons. The futons themselves were very comfortable and the comforters were warm and soft.
There is also an excellent onsen onsite, with one men onsen, one women onsen, and one open air mixed onsen right across the street. The gender segregated onsens have both a larger indoor hot tob and a smaller outdoor one and we found that we did not have to use the showers in our rooms because the onsen showers were fabulous. The open air onsen has a wonderful view of the raging river and the surrounding mountains, and was a very peaceful experience.
We had a "half board package" which we highly recommend as this covers an ample breakfast and a huge Japanese style dinner, both of which are delicious and presented excellently. Every meal we ate in that hotel was unique but still delicious.
The Hodakaso Sangetsu was a uniquely Japanese experience, from the onsens to the food and the rooms, and we were glad we picked this hotel despite the complaints about no English skills. This small drawback does not detract from the beauty and uniqueness of this property in the Japanese alps!

Room Tip: get a half board plan to save on food costs as this hotel is in a remote location
