It started with a temple and breathtaking views of Laos and Myanmar.Every year developing, now elephants,Chinese Buddhas,a boat, drums and bells.Still has Hilltribe children, willing to act as cultural models in the photos for 20 baht.
Souvenir shopping on the other side of the street.Good icecream.
The development and skyline for Laos amazing, multifunctional hotel casino resorts and hightail boats crossing the river.
Witness the changes .

If you’re nearby then I recommend visiting the Golden Triangle. It’s neat to see the spot where the 3 countries meet. Myanmar is noticeably underdeveloped while Laos is going through some major development projects along the river. I suspect Chinese money is involved.

The Don Sao market is nothing special but it’s fun to haggle for a few cheap souvenirs and have a Beerlao.

We visited the Golden Triangle as part of a longer day trip out from Chiang Mai.
Overall the experience was very poor.

Admittedly there was a lot of history here and the most interesting part was standing on the Thai side high across the Mekong River to see Myanmar and Laos.

The biggest selling point of the visit is to see all three countries from one vantage point.
The history part I can read in a book.

The low point was the trip over to Don Sao (technically a part of Laos.)

If you're looking for cheap Chinese knock offs, cigarettes and cobra/scorpion whiskey then this is your place

It's extremely seedy, sad and not worth the visit.

Our guide mentioned that the village was originally populated by Laotians who sold their wares, but now the land has been leased by Chinese vendors of the worst possible kind.

We literally hopped back on the boat back to Thailand in 15 minutes.

Stay far, far away!

The boat ride to Laos wasn't included in my tour so I paid 300Thb for the 1.5hr tour. We boarded a boat, leaving the market in the golden triangle and then headed to Donsao Island In Laos. We paid a small entrance fee of 30Thb and our passports were held back in Thailand. There wasn't much here besides knock off goods, snake wine and laos beer. I liked it as a cheap and easy way to say I've been to Laos, but this isn't Laos... It's just a tourist market. It is interesting to get on a boat and see Myarmar, Laos and Thailand along with all the large barges crossing the river. This is a hub of activity but it really seems set up as a tourist show than a real experience. I skipped the snake whiskey, wasn't feeling that adventurous but perhaps I should have.

Heard so many things about Golden Triangle and I have had the opportunity to witness it myself. Heard many horror stories where people are being killed when drug deals turned awry. It is an eye opener and they boat ride to 3 countries (Laos, Thailand & Myanmar) is something you will enjoy. There is a local village where you can purchase some local souvenirs and snap some pictures.
