I usually stay in smaller boutique hotels but having just come back from a live aboard and the dive shop being opposite, I thought this would be easy. I wish I hadn't.
Check in was marred by no welcome drink/towel (I only realised I'd missed out when I checked out and saw others with the ), despite my looking tired and disheveled from the boat trip back. It was also uncomfortable due to a member of staff yelling at a guest who was reduced to tears. Not professional. Then there was the wait for the bellboy to drive me the 2 minutes to my room...once there he grabbed my case, ran upstairs leaving me to figure out whee he'd gone. There was no helping me, or showing me into the room.
Now the room was a good size, with a good shower and comfortable bed. But no mini bar?!
The air con works well, and the resort is peaceful. Breakfast is plentiful and the coffee issue I saw on another report is resolved. Staff by the pool/beach are friendly and helpful, but I wish this could be said for all staff. Some of the reception staff are great (the two ladies there this afternoon for instance) but others are surly and rude. The lady booking the (very expensive) taxis is unhelpful and the bellboys will just ignore you if they can. My taxi didn't show and only one of the reception ladies made any effort to help me until I made to leave to find another option. Then a very lovely driver and bellboy arranged me a hotel minibus, which were quite simply the nicest people there. The hotel is bland and sterile and I think the staff don't know what to do if you're on your own. It isn't the sort of welcome I've come to expect in Thailand and will, in future, stick to smaller boutique hotels.

What's great about this resort - everything. The food, especially the breakfast was magnificient.

As my children have grown up, I really appreciated the adults only peaceful pool and swim up bar.

I stayed in a junior suite - if you can afford it...itscworth it :)

Could not rate it high enough, thankyou.

We first visited 2 years earlier and enjoyed our stay so much we booked for 5 nights to start off this trip. This is the only hotel we have returned to out of 7 trips to Thailand as we generally go to different resorts. It was a very good and relaxing start and still as good as before. The very spacious rooms still look as good and the staff are just as helpful as we remembered. The beach front location is perfect for walking along the beach to other bars etc or simply having a swim in the sea. It's close to walk out to other shops and restaurants up the road or catch a taxi to Bang Niang road with many shops etc and a market also. The hotel serves a wonderful choice for breakfast and they have other restaurants for lunch or dinner. It serves a good location from Phuket airport and for trips to The Similan Islands etc.
Many thanks for more Thai hospitality

I was so looking forward to returning to The Sands – my home away from home and to see the friends that I made last trip. To refresh the memories of peacefulness, quality staff, great service and the happy smiling faces that greeted me so warmly last visit to the resort.
I was not disappointed in any way other than to be mentioned in the following report.
From the time we entered the site and stepped out of the car sent to meet us at the airport, we were met with smiles from the porters, in particular Arunrot , drinks and moist towels at reception and a very warm, friendly, huge smiling and professional team at the front desk namely Suranee and Jeerawan. The welcome back message was really appreciated by us.
The whole reception area people were so helpful and saw to every need we had throughout the time we were there. They sorted out our accommodation problems very successfully due to our health issues and helped us with any enquiry we had instantaneously and always with a positive attitude, whether in person or on the phone, to ensure once again we had a wonderful stay.
After a short stay in one room we moved to the room that we had last year and were delighted to see the maid we had last year. Once again we were greeted with a very fond memory, a welcoming smile and a genuine “ I was your maid last year” from the delightful Tippawan who once again did a marvellous job. She always left the room spotless and attended to all the other duties with care, courtesy and consideration. Kranda and Alista were great support to Tippawan.
During the transfer to the room we met up with a very old friend from Kathatani and The Shore Lon. Many thanks should also go to Left, Adison and Lerkiat who were the other porters who showed total respect, recognition of us with a great amount of cheer and smiles that was totally appreciated by us.
The facilities and grounds were always looking superb. The gardeners all do a fantastic job to keep the plantings and lawns in tip top condition and should all be applauded because buildings are always difficult to keep up to scratch – the painters, electricians, the handymen should all be congratulated on the ever constant jobs of keeping things repaired and looking good for all of us to use and view.
The food quality of the Talay restaurant was far superior to our last memories and the very helpful, courteous, professional and lovely smiling staff really made an impact on us. Trainee 10, Rinrada and Thawatchai were outstanding along with great support to the other generous hard working staff at the restaurant.
Once again we enjoyed immensely, The Floating Restaurant. Our first contact with the eatery was the superb, mindful, totally professional and ‘everywhere man’ Armello, a master of greeting and organising guests on arrival. The food had improved even more on last year with variety and the catering for the increasing number of nationalities. Noppon (Noy) on the egg bar was still at his brilliant best and totally remembered me while displaying a great sense of humour and laugh – a very happy individual who is eager to help everyone.
Mr Narong should be applauded not only for his running of the Food and Beverage section of the Resort but for the way in which he handles and passes on praise to the junior staff. Nittaya – the everywhere lady who rolls up her sleeves and gets into the table service, the caring and wonderfully endearing relationships she has formed with us and surely she is well respected and loved by the staff. She leads by example in an exceptionally professional way. Desire to help and to do their jobs were shown by all the staff belonging to the restaurant. An enormous amount of care and friendliness were showed by Paweena, Pongasporn, Aong, Supaporn, Wilaiporn, Thong, Jit who was spectacular, Pawadee, Piyapong , who knew their jobs, were constantly smiling and attentive. A special thanks and congratulations should go to Student Trainee 97 who was gracious, helpful and was always wanting to practice his English and apologising for not speaking it too well. He is trying so hard to be a great employee and improve.
The Coconut Bar still had the cheeriness, service smiles that it had last visit.
The Peace Pool was used by me daily and it was clean and well used. It is a shame that some of the tourists did not use it properly and that children were asked to move out by the staff because the parents did not appear to support the rules or chose not to supervise the children at the Joy Pool.
The fitness centre was a great aid in my recovery from back surgery and all the staff were proficient, organised and controlled the use of the gym extremely well when it came to unsupervised children.
The sign in was good the facilities were clean and the equipment was suitable. The eucalyptus, moist towels were appreciated after the work outs. In peak season be sure to pick your times when attending. Mr Jom the activities manager should be congratulated on his program but also his outside of hours work as a fire dancer. Thonwut and student trainee 113 did marvellous work in the area and of course Amello was more than helpful when he was stationed there.
The Kids Club worked brilliantly for those of the age while the recreation centre, petonque and tennis courts were used a lot more than I remember from last year.
The massage unit of ladies at Sala should be commended for the hard day’s work that they put in each and every day. Special thanks should go to Mam who really looked after my back and feet, Jub and Ae also looked after me and Tong and Taam who massaged my wife.
The unsung heroes of the resort did not go unnoticed either. The gate men who constantly spoke to everyone; the pool men, especially Som Song who often work by themselves and are up and finished before we even think about enjoying ourselves. The superman who absolutely enjoys his job – “the feeder of the Fish” Surchai must be mentioned because of the enjoyment he brings to the children, their parents and the many Koi – a real treat twice a day.
The Cocktail Party. What an absolute delight for those returning to The Sands. Three important things came from this event- firstly you got to see more hard working staff that do so much behind and in front of the scenes. The managers of units and so on, the ones you may not see. Secondly, the staff which work that you don’t see but are seen in a convivial note. The special event that is organised for our behalf and mark of thanks and the mingling with them just shows the happiness of all who attended.
The only gripe would have to be the tourists who attend the Resort and are totally out of control when they get too much alcohol and become obnoxious, loud, demeaning to the workers and the Thais in general. The people of the Resort don’t like it nor do the other tourists. It is disturbing that the honest, hardworking , smiling staff who are beautiful people should not be treated as servants as they are wonderful polite workers. I am quite pleased that a strong policing policy by the staff is a united thing but they should be not placed in that position at all.
To those that did annoy, the Aussies and others, appreciate the people and value the work and the embodiment of gentleness, happiness and the genuine pleasure of looking after you.
Thank you all for a wonderful holiday.

Spent 5 fabulous nights here with our family including 2 teenagers. We had the 2 bedroom family apartment and it was brilliant. The view was amazing the amenities first class. The breakfast was the best We've had over a dozen resorts we have stayed at in Thailand. The pools were perfect, wi-if spot on. All staff that we came across were very nice and helpful. The location is probably the best in Khao Lak.
Definitely a 4-4.5 star resort
