Not the quality I expected from Hilton

Review of Hilton Albany
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Aug 2020
Given the circumstances during this Pandemic I understand things are limited but to shut down vital parts of Hotel and not make sure your patrons are aware before hand is not professional. The hotel quality was maybe average and not worthy of the price attached to the Hilton's reputation. Room was clean but rugs in hall not clean and it seemed like they rented out most rooms on the same floor. People smoking weed could be traced throughout the hall ways and parties in suites were less then desirable. I truly felt the stay was not worth the price, I could have stayed in Latham or Colonie for much less and probably received same accommodations.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one night to break up our drive from Long Island to Lake Placid - not to mention Albany was my college town, and it is always nice to visit. The hotel was very clean, professional, and had plenty of protocols and precautions set up for the pandemic. Checking in and out was smooth and quick. We were able to check in at 2 instead of 4, which was nice.

The cleaned rooms are sealed off with a sticker, and the moveable amenities (such as the remote) are wrapped up, ensured to have been cleaned.

We were on the 9th floor and had a great view of the New York State Capitol building.

The location is very convenient - we walked over to Empire Plaza, saw the egg, viewed some fireworks over the city. We also walked our way up to Washington Tavern to get some wings, and then enjoyed our night in watching movies and having some drinks. We did get a drink at the bar in the hotel lobby, which was primarily empty, and again, everything was super clean.

Parking was $20 a night, but that is to be expected here.

I would recommend this hotel for businesses, or for people that are either: A) stopping over, or B) visiting Albany briefly.

Great way to start off our 8 night vacation - and very happy with how clean everything was.

Room tip: Higher floor, and view towards the capitol.

We stayed here May 30. When we arrived, we were informed the phones inside the hotel did not work and we would have to come downstairs if we needed anything. The ice maker, not on our floor, that I was sent to was broken and I had to go to another floor. This morning, the elevators weren’t working. There was a riot in Albany last night, and I was concerned when the elevator didn’t work. So before going downstairs, I called the main number using my cell phone. There was no answer. I called the police, and they could not get through. The police assured me it was safe to exit the building so we walked down 7 flights of stairs with our luggage to the lobby to find Shivonne on her cell phone chatting away. I informed her the elevators did not work and I tried to call her. She said the phones are not working AT ALL and said there was nothing she could do about the elevator. It is inexcusable in this day and age to operate a hotel and not have a way for guests to contact the front desk in an emergency. I would not ever stay here again because of the nonchalant attitude towards guest safety by the hotel staff.

Stayed here for a few nights on a business trip. The hotel has become average at best. I had a suite on the executive floor with two rooms but only one window in the bedroom (the window is important in this review). Four elevators in the hotel but only three were operating. When you take out 25% of your capacity to move guests to and from rooms you end up with long lines. I used a stairway to go down more than once (which took me out to a street and not the lobby).

The room was hot. There were directions on the wall for how to control the temperature to make it cooler. The room was 74 degrees so I followed the instructions. Upon returning to the room a few hours later the temperature was up to 80! I informed someone who said it would be taken care of. Got back to the room later and the heating/cooling system was turned off and my one window was open. That’s how it remained for my days/nights here but the room was cooler (especially considering it was about 20 degrees outside).

Most employees were wonderful including my housekeeper who did an outstanding job. Front desk employees too, who tried hard to take care of every issue. The banquet staff were amazing. A couple of employees though not so much. One hilton shuttle driver informed us they were done with work at 7 pm and would not work past that time even though we needed to make three stops on a very short run. I was also charged for coffee by the person in the coffee shop that I didn’t authorize be charged to my room (the front desk did remove the charge when I checked out). The issue was the executive lounge where I would get coffee was closed when it was supposed to be open and I was instructed to go to the coffee shop instead. The person working there must not have ever been told that and didn’t seem to have much of a sense of humor about it either.

This hotel should be a crown jewel for Hilton. Steps from the NYS Capitol and government agencies in Albany. Stay here if you must but work needs to be done to bring this hotel back to the way it should be and once was.

overall experience with Hilton Albany is very poor, the hotel lack maintenance overall, the revolving door at the reception area has been out of order since my last sty in November 2019, doors and locking system at the room doors are in a bad condition and do not always allow you to open, after asking for repair, nothing happened.. breakfast very poor and overpriced, the hotel is over priced for the state it in and the service you get, as a Hilton honor member I do expect a little more.
the staff try there best to be helpful, but the overall experience is just overshadowing that.

Stayed here for a wrestling tournament with my team. It is in a great location, near the arena and plenty of places to eat and drink. It is a clean hotel, but whenever we are there, they do seem to be a little overwhelmed. The check in process is a nightmare if you don't have the Hilton app, so I STRONGLY suggest you get that. The rooms are spacious and clean. I have eaten at the breakfast buffet a few times. It is good but definitely overpriced. A good selection of items, just expensive. I would also recommend staying on a lower floor, because during busy times, the elevator situation is almost as bad as the check in. When we were there, they were down one elevator, which made it worse. But overall, it's a nice hotel, friendly staff that try their best to accommodate and in a great location.

Room tip: Get a lower floor to avoid the elevators.
