“What a gorgeous property, a short walk into Ubud centre”

When booking for 10 people in Ubud, you are always going to struggle to find a location close to town. Villa Madu is about as close as you will find that suits. It is around 400m down a wide 'gang' popping out onto Ubud main road where Mojo Burritos sits on the corner. Turning right, its about a full 1km walk to the top end of the markets. There is shade, and plenty of places to buy water on the way and enough interesting things to see to keep it fun. It would be suggested that you hire a scooter for an extended stay, as transport in Ubud is always negotiated and can be annoying at times.

The main house is stunning. Set in lovely tropical gardens with steep gardens sloping off to the river below. Its very well looked after, and the staff are constantly working to keep it looking great. The main house has 2 lovely bedrooms, the main with its outdoor bathroom is airconditioned. The upstairs bedroom is also lovely with its own bathroom. There is also a sitting room with a large daybed which we used as bed to sleep on (more on that later). There is also another bathroom up stairs, but the shower did not have any hot water.

Downstairs, the kitchen is magnificent and the lounge area large enough to cater for a large party of people. Congrats to the designer, as the open air feel of the home is just beautiful.

There are 2 more 'cottages' lower on the property. Both with extra beds. One room had 2 singles pushed together, and had its own bathroom. The other has a queen bed and a single as well, also with its own bathroom. We had a problem with this room, as it smelt very mouldy, to the point where we decided it was not really habitable to sleep. It really does need a good airing, and I passed the info onto Adrienne the owner, and I am sure she is dealing with it now. This is why we ended up staying upstairs on the daybed.

Having the extra 2 rooms away from the house, was for us really the only drawback, and would be the only thing that would make us re-think staying there again as a group. Its only a minor thing, and other people may not be concerned by it. Also, we are not sure you could really fit 10 people into the Villa unless someone is relegated to the daybed every night (its a slightly firmer mattress than the other beds)

The gardens and pool are stunning, but be warned that the pool is a little cooler than some we have used in Bali as its not in full sun all day, due to the number of large trees on the property.

We had a lovely birthday party at the Villa one evening. Adrienne arranged everything for us, and Nurdi and the other staff really pulled out all stops to make it great for us. The food served was absolutely fantastic, and remains some of the best Indonesian food any of us ate on the 12 day trip. Congrats to the staff from everyone you made happy.
Please note that the staff tend to be in and out of the Villa all day. This may be disconcerting for others who may be used to complete privacy on a Villa holiday. It may be best to discuss with Adrienne when booking.

Adrienne the owner is a lovely lovely lady, and she really did help us from the very moment I booked to the moment we left.

I am very happy to reccomend Villa Madu to anyone looking for a great villa in a central Ubud location.

Management Response

Dear Wayne,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and thoughtful review. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay with us, and we also are very appreciative of your comments and suggestions.

We have had an extraordinarily wet and extended rainy season this year which will explain the mustiness in one of the teak wood bungalows. We aired out all of the mattresses and curtains in the hot sun (when it finally appeared) and replaced the pillows and the problem appears to have been solved.

As we have only been available as a rental for a little over a year, my staff is used to serving my personal guests, my friends and family, in a style that is less formal than one may expect at a hotel. I've discussed with them your valuable comment about guests that may prefer more privacy, and how to be more sensitive to that need.

Thank you again for your recommendation and your kindness to me and my staff.

Sincerely,
Adrienne
