We went tubing for a whole day. I took at least one hour walking or more to get to the place to start. There are two rivers: Don Diego (cold water) and Don Dieguito (warm water)...We started there where the two rivers come together. The trees and wildlife is amazing and at the end.. wow there are no words. It's great to see where the river reaches the sea. It was a wonderful journey through the river for about 3 - 4 hours.

We went tubing with two small children, and we all loved it (everyone wanted to go back to do it again). We saw a caiman, many monkeys and amazing, beautiful birds. The water was low, so it was a gentle tubing experience (we did the shorter trip from the bridge down to the ocean, there is a longer one, but we started late in the day). There was a "guide" with us to point out the birds etc. and also to keep our tubes from getting too close to the shore or out of shallow places. If you want to spend some time at the beach afterwards, ask them not to send the boat to get you right away.
We got here by taking the bus from our hotel (Villa Maria - highly recommended). Our hotel had even called ahead so they were ready for us when we got there. You can leave your bags / change of clothes etc. in the office while you tube. Bring a waterproof camera - there is so much wildlife to see.

Take the Tayrona/Palamino Bus from Santa Marta (better yet stay at Hotel Villa Maria Tayrona and they'll give you instructions,,,or you can catch the bus at the entrance to the Park). Tell the driver "Despues La Puente en el Rio Don Diego para tubing". You'll see tire tubes in front of the store. Guide will push you along the river and pick you up at the end with a boat. 2 hour trip and they'll store your gear. Take it all the way to the sea. We liked this more than the actual beaches in Tayrona. Howler Monkey's are abundant and birding is awesome. Good trip for everyone for about 50,000 pesos each...we saw a very young child having an awesome time.

A relaxing way to spend an afternoon, I'd say. The Rio Don Diego is about 4/5 kilometres East of Tayrona park and is a great relaxing trip if you want something easy to do; say, get over jet lag, or just chill.
Take the small bus that shuttles along the coast road and ask the driver to put you off at Rio Don Diego. Your hotel will tell you in which direction to travel from where you are staying. The bus driver will ask you which end of the bridge you need but if your spanish is as bad as mine you won't understand. But it really doesn't matter.
When you get off the bus you should ask for 'Michael' but in any case he will find you. Then you have two choices: either walk upstream for about 45 minutes and float down the river , or set off floating downstream to the sea and you will be brought back by motor launch.
This is a really laid back afternoon. We enjoyed the first option because we wished to stretch our legs a little and to be honest, the one hour it took to float back downstream was enough.
The river is crystal clear, certainly OK to swim in. Nowhere is specially deep and where it is particularly shallow the water is barely white. You are not offered a lifevest and really only kids would need one. Michael wades/swims alongside you for the whole trip and a lot of the time your backside bumps on the bottom. There is stuff happening on the river, kids playing and the odd fisherman, that sort of thing. Some wildlife, mainly birds, but Michael will make sure you get to see some monkeys.
Really peaceful and easy fun.

This was a great activity/adventure the day after Tyrona Park. Tubing through Rio Don Diego and watching the wild life was amazing!!! there is not much rapids and if you get out of the tube in some places it gets to your knees. At the end of the ride you get to the ocean for amazing views, and they take you back in motor boat!! Just do it!!
