Weekend Getaway

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Jul 2021
After reading some of the reviews, we were a little nervous going in to our stay. Upon arrival our room was upgraded to an ocean view which was amazing. The staff—from the valets, concierges, front desk, pool staff to the building engineer (and his dog Berkeley) were all friendly and helpful. Our room was clean, large enough for our needs and the view was amazing! We will definitely be going back. Hotel is close to the beach, convention hall, Wonder Bar and The Stone Pony.

Asbury is the perfect weekend getaway, and this hotel is the best spot to stay! Came for a long weekend and had an amazing experience. I’ve stayed here several times but this was by far the best one. From checking in with Alexis at the front desk, meeting Joe during our stay and encountering the BEST night auditor John overnight - the staff went above and beyond to take care of us during our stay. We ended up extending our trip because we didn’t want to leave Asbury or our new friends. We can’t wait to come back in the fall. Thank you to the staff for making us feel at home.

BEWARE! Paid 600/night and didn’t even get the room cleaned! At that price you expect good top service and cleanliness, we didn’t even get basic! . When I complained they said that due to Covid they don’t do beds or clean the rooms. That’s such a 2020 excuse. I wish they had warned me, I would have gone to any other normal hotel. Now you are warned so don’t book this! It’s definitely not worth $600/night. Not even $300! At that price Stay at the asbury, ocean place, or the wave, which are all newer and by the ocean.
Other bad notes: the valet/bellboy was moody and flustered. Not only i wasn’t greeted with a “hi, welcome to our hotel”, I didn’t even get help with the luggage. I kept getting yelled at by him to park my car correctly (it was literally 2 feet from the sidewalk), while holding up my dad, who has a cane and can’t walk on his own, and figuring out how to park my car, get the suitcase, and get dad to a seat all at the same time.
Again, this hotel is worth $150 a night, it’s like I booked a cheap motel! These guys have no clue of what a good hotel charging $600/night should look like.

Room tip: Don’t come on summer weekends. Don’t book if it’s more than $200 when you stay. Not worth it. Stay at the Asbury, Ocean place, or Wave.

Hi Worldcitizen22,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I apologize that your stay at The Berkeley was less than perfect.

As much as we wish COVID was a thing of the past, we do still have to remain cautious and keep our employees' and guests' health our number one priority. Light service is provided upon request and we would've been delighted to replenish any amenities that were requested.

We will definitely speak to our staff regarding their service and remind them to be mindful of how they treat our guests. How you were treated is not the reputation we would like to hold and I hope we can make it up to you in the future! Thank you so much for joining us and we hope to see you again soon.

We, (a couple enjoying a short but two fun days in Asbury Park and Belmar beaches ) were very happy and impressed with this hotel..

Everybody at this hotel was pleasant and helpful. We like to recognize Steve, in charge of the security and I am sure many other duties, and thank him for his professionalism. This hotel has great location, nice pool and the great pool staff, great bartender, good food and drinks, decent room and overall a very relaxing place with a lot of space for everyone.

Thank you Berkeley and we will be back hopefully very soon!

Check-in was great, and easy. They asked us the reason for our trip, and we said it was our 28th wedding anniversary. Without asking they upgraded our room to a corner suite. Beautiful view of the pool and ocean. Room half updated half a bit battered. Bedding linens Updated. Couch updated. Table looks like it’s from 1980 and banged up. New bathroom but only two bath towels and two washcloths. No hand towels.

Room tip: There is parking at the hotel for a fee, or parking on the streets, which seems complicated. Good Asian restaurant, and beautiful pool

Hi Rishkel3,

Thank you for your review and feedback. We are happy to hear that the front desk made the check-in process quick and efficient, and were able to upgrade you to a special suite for your 28th anniversary! Our housekeeping team has been made aware of the lack of linens and we'll be ensuring that each room has the appropriate amount of linens moving forward.

Thank you, once again, for choosing The Berkeley to celebrate this special milestone and we hope to see you again during your next visit to Asbury Park!

Definitely way below expectations considering the history, location and cost. For a 3-day/2-night weekend stay the room rate averaged well over $300/night for a standard king room. The building exterior looks classic and exclusive. But the appointments in the hotel were very disappointing.

Parking is a complete ripoff with valet at $65/night and street parking is hard to come by and around $25/day.

The bellman wandered the entrance on his cell phone and literally helped no one. The lobby area is dated and very run down looking.

Elevators are a nightmare. One elevator broke down 3 times in the same day and was eve to shut down for the rest of the weekend. Just getting an elevator after that was a 10-15 minute process and it’s only a 6-floor building.

Our room was poorly appointed, run down looking, and in desperate need of updates. It came equipped with a non-working television, non-working room phone and only 2 towels for showering. The shower head was pitted and rusty and the windows offered zero noise insulation from the city street view we had.

I needed to use my cellphone to call the front desk who offered no apologies, just someone to come fix the problems. After waiting 40-minutes I called back to cancel because I could not wait any longer.

The next day we again requested maintenance and also requested extra towels. The maintenance issues were fixed hours later. The towels never arrived.

The coffee shop has terrible coffee and the staff at the front desk come across like they are doing you a favor by letting you stay there.

I will never return to this hotel; to me for the money the property comes up way short of expectations.

Hi Reegs75,

Although we are not happy to receive reviews like this, we appreciate your honesty and transparency as this is the only way to improve our procedures to ensure guest satisfaction.

We do charge for valet parking, however, we also suggest street parking with the city as a less expensive alternative for guests. Parking throughout this area is scarce but we always give 2 options during check-in and allow guests to choose based on their preference.

We have since contacted our elevator servicing company to correct this issue. To ensure the safety of our guests, the elevator had to remain out of service until proper maintenance was completed.

I sincerely apologize for the poor condition of your room and lack of linens. Housekeeping and maintenance have both been notified of these issues and will be sure to equip the rooms better moving forward.

We would love to connect with you directly to make things right. We understand that these types of deficiencies are unacceptable and strive to provide a quality experience for all guests. I look forward to hearing back from you soon to further discuss this stay and we would love another opportunity to gain your loyalty to The Berkeley.
