The "Couples Garden" is wonderful. It is the scale of a large home with grounds and feels like you could imagine living there. It's the sort of place that you look for the small details (be sure to look up as well as around!) rather than take lots of dramatic photos. Highly recommended.

This garden is hard to find, down an alley off Xi Bei Street. I suggest you bring the tourist map supplied by the Information Centre opposite the Suzhou Museum, and show it to locals as you go. They are happy to direct you, even when they speak no English, and you will eventually find the garden (as well as two others in the same general vicinity).
Unlike the UNESCO gardens, this serves as an active community centre, with meetings going on and families picnicking here and there. The water feature is much reduced and the plantings less lavish. The quality of the buildings is high but some rooms are closed or used for storage of chairs, documents, etc.
No admission fee. Local markets nearby.

Much smaller and less crowded than the Humble Administrator's Garden. Like other reviews said, get here early to avoid the tour groups. The garden is much nicer when it is quiet and peaceful; the yelling tour groups disrupt the tranquility (and also make it very difficult to move about).

This Garden in Suzhou is nice and properly maintained. It’s not one of the biggest but you can a have a feeling of the old Chinese way of life.
I’ve enjoyed this attraction and it allows to go the canals and the old city of Suzhou. The subway is near and due to the size and location it allows you see a “part of China”, a lot of other attractions are near and according the time you have you can use it well.

Ouyuan Garden (The Couple's Retreat Garden) was added to UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 2000. It took a little more than an hour from Shanghai to Ouyuen.
This is a typical wealthy or government official house. The house has 2 gardens, south side and east. This garden went through many owners and history and it eventually became run down. In 1960 the government of Suzhou city renovated the garden step by step restoring it to its former glory. The rocks, trees, flowers, stream and bridge in the Chinese garden is totally different than the western style, which gives people a very refreshing feeling. At the back door of the garden, you also can hop on a Chinese gondola for a short ride on the canal with singing for entertainment. We spent 3 hours there with a guide. Out of all the attractions that we went to, this was the quietest place. We relaxed and took photos without anyone in the way.
Happy Travelling!
