Five years ago we discovered this idyllic coastal strip where crumbling mansions lined the leafy hillside on the south side of the bay and opposite there wasa derelict landing stage where you could picnic and watch the maritime coming and goings offshore. Huge tour liners drop off tourists by the thousand keen to explore the delights of lovely fortified city of Kotor.but it was clear that this little backwater was protected from the crowds by the tunnel that speeds the traffic between Kotor and Budva and the main road to Podgorica and on to Serbia and to a lesser extend the busy ferry that saves 30 miles of driving between Herzog Novi and Budva has helped too.

Ruined churches, empty mansions with young trees growing in the guttering of their eaves; quays and jetties with wild flowers filling the every crack in the disused harbour walls with a dazzling display..... this lost world of yesteryear is changing. The recession is over... the whole of the nouveau riche of Eastern Europe plus a good percentage of West German's established middle class are snapping up bargains If you like gentrification of dilapidated old villages then you might like to wait a couple of years before you explore this area. That will let the dust to settle and the diggers to move on to new projects..... Bar perhaps, Ulcinj maybe; both those towns are closer to poor underdeveloped Albania. But if you like finding little gems where maybe a man with a flock of sheep will come to let them graze on the shore or a person with a laden mule might wish you "Dobre Utro" as they turn of back into the hills then turn off to right at the end of Kotor just before the road heads off for the tunnel road... or take a shrp left after you drive off the ferry and head away from Tivat. and go there soon before it enters any further into the third millennium . ;

This bay is magnificent. We did a kayak trip around the Bay and swam at one of the beaches. The setting is heavenly.

This is a world heritage site and truly deserves the designation. The scenery with lime stone cliffs rising from the fiord-like bay is magnificent.

If you are coming from Albania or from Croatia, you will definitely drive around the bay of Kotor. The Bay stretches around as far as your eyes can see, and each one of the towns around the Bay provides a perfect place to stop and relax. When you arrive in Kotor, large yachts and sailboats line the harbor in front of the city's gates. It is truly something you must see.
