“Perfect for us, everything we needed.”

The apartment was well equiped and furnished, with balcony overlooking the sea. A walk across a field, about ten minutes to the beach. Lovely little fishing villages nearby, and about a 45 minute boat journey to Dubrovnik, beautiful.
Niksa and Marina were very helpful and friendly.

“Perfect location, excellent hospitality.”
Reviewed 3 October 2012 for a stay in September 2012

The apartment was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious with a good size balcony with beautiful sea view. There are lots of steps to a beautiful, small, quiet beach but well worth a visit - sea was so calm and swimming lovely. There is a very good restaurant within walking distance - lovely food and very reasonably priced. There is also a small shop within walking distance. Bus stops very close with regular services to Cavtat and Dubrovnik. Niksa (owner) was extremely helpful with airport pick up, emergency milk and wine, and use of phone when we could not operate payphone. All in all it was pretty perfect and would definitely return. Thanks once again.

“A fortnight of bliss on the Dubrovnik Riviera!”
Reviewed 21 August 2012 for a stay in July 2012

24 July - 7 August 2012
We stayed at Apartmani Soline for two weeks in July/August 2012. The apartment forms part of an attractive, peach-coloured, white-balconied, multi-storey construction on three levels. The owner and his family live downstairs and there is an identical apartment next-door to ours.
Our apartment was smallish, with the bedroom and sitting room (containing small open-plan kitchen and breakfast bar) more or less forming one room, kind of like a bed-sitting room. The balcony was larger than we expected with a fabulous view across the bay to Cavtat and the islands.
Cooking facilities are adequate to basic, depending on how much and what sort of cooking you plan to do.
What we hadn't expected, and which came as a nice surprise, was an large outdoor barbecue area (communal to the twin apartments) with large dining table. The barbecue takes some skill to get going (wood is provided by the owners but you need to buy charcoal) but we had several very nice evenings there.

One reason for the view is the elevated position of the location: this is potentially bad news for those who dislike lots of hills, and in particular lots of stone steps. I counted 348 steps down to the nearest beach: however, if you are passably fit and don't mind a bit of extra exercise on holiday then the rewards vastly outweigh any disadvantages: the views on the (at times fairly shallow) descent are stunning: past olive, orange, almond, pomegranate and even fig trees (and, to our surprise large, ripe blackberries), the sea beckons tantalisingly all the way down.
The sea itself, in late July, was a delight: usually warm, always crystal clear, I spent hours floating in it (and I'm not really a water lover). The small beach, as generally in mainland Croatia, consists of large pebbles which get very hot in the sun so sturdy beach shoes are an absolute necessity. We also took a beach tent: useful for privacy and for storage, we could easily have done without it. There was very little wind in such a sheltered location. There is another even smaller beach close by and slightly nearer, other than that the three beaches in nearby Plat are just about within walking distance depending how much you like energetic walking!

We decided, for reasons of economy, not to hire a car: it is worth noting that one half of the apartment-owning marital team runs a car hire firm. We understood that in high season car hire can be difficult, so it would be advisable to book in advance. We found that we could just about manage without one: buses run between Cavtat and Dubrovnik every hour or half-hour (depending on the time of day) and are generally comfortable, and not usually overcrowded. The universal fare for this route in summer 2012 was 15 kuna (young children travel free). The apartment is right by the bus stop: the owner gave us a timetable, and we found that adding 25 minutes to the stated departure time from Dubrovnik was a fair guide as to when to expect the bus going to Cavtat, and roughly 15 minutes to the departure time from Cavtat for the journey in the opposite direction. The airport is 10 minutes by car from the apartment, and the owner picked us up and dropped us off at either end of our holiday, even offering to stop for us, on arrival, at a local supermarket to buy provisions. Taxis we found very expensive, and metred, so there was little point in haggling.
Other than that the nearest shop is in Plat, about 20 minutes walk away. This shop is quite expensive and closes early (8pm) but is useful in an emergency. For those with cars there are a lot more options of course: the best supermarket in the area is probably the Mercator in Srebreno, a couple of miles away.
There is also a restaurant about 10 minutes walk from the apartment, which we were told was of high quality: I visited only the once, and was not disappointed: the food was excellent, the prices reasonable, and, certainly going at midday, had more of a "local" flavour to it than other places we visited.
There are local travel firms who arrange trips to places of interest such as the historic old city of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina (roughly 80 miles away) or to Montenegro (20 miles to the south). On making enquiries I realised that there was a lot of competition between these firms, who were only to happy to pick us up from our apartment en route.

It would be hard to exaggerate the sense of peace and tranquillity in the immediate area. As you drive from the airport you have the shimmering Adriatic on the left and the mountains marking the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina a short distance to the right. The "main road" in between runs up the coast to Dubrovnik, but it's more like a country road than a main artery. Down to the left, as you head towards Soline, is the small resort and port of Cavtat which we visited several times by bus. Here you can shop in any of the gift and souvenir shops, where we always found the staff very welcoming and friendly, or simply wander around the port admiring the boats! There are lots of boat trips on offer from the port: you can do a 2-hour circuit in a glass-bottomed boat, visit one of the nearby islands, or do what we decided to do: take a one-way trip to Dubrovnik, arriving in the old port of that city, and returning to our apartment by bus.

In summary, we had a fantastic holiday here, enhanced for us by the apartment owners being so kind and helpful. If you are expecting sandy beaches and a hectic nighlife, or you don't like or have difficulty with steps (you are effectively on the split levels of the lower slopes of a mountain range here, so there are few large, flat open spaces) then this area is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, you enjoy swimming in beautifully clear water, appreciate a glorious sea view, want to hear largely only the sound of the sea and the chanting of the crickets (as well as throwing in trips to a historic old city like nearby Dubrovnik or attractive resorts like Cavtat) then this is most definitely the place.

We had a fantastic holiday here, the appartment was everything we hoped it would be and the location between Cavtat and Dubrovnik was excellent. Dubrovnik is quite unique, so much to see and do, overflowing with restauarants and beautiful sea views. Quie possibly the best holiday we've ever had!
