Would love to go back....

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Jan 2019
After reading the reviews on Trip Advisor I booked for five days here, and we really enjoyed our stay.
Yes, we got lost the first night, (late, dark, raining, mis-read one of the signs see below) but that in no way diminished our enjoyment. I love sleeping to the sounds of the surf on the far distant reef. I have visited many Pacific Islands and the key to a wonderful holiday is taking it as you find it. Fijians are very hospitable. Club Med it is not, but the hosts care about your needs and go out of their way to do all they can to make you comfortable whilst caring about protecting the ecology and what nature provides.

We had very strong winds here the first two days, typical of all islands in the central Pacific. But I sat on our verandah one morning as the sun rose, listening to the dawn chorus before the rooster woke up, watching wading birds along the sea edge at low tide, and the hermit crabs scuttling about. It was idyllic.
The swimming in the lagoon was great: take with a snorkel, and you can see many tropical fish darting about. Bring old shoes with you to wear in the sea.

We choose a digital detox and did not use WiFi at all. Our favourite meals were the chicken salad (fried chicken) and the fish curry, reminiscent of SEAsian delicious fresh curry sauces. The last night we were there we had the lovo (earth oven cooked food, like a NZ hangi) which was culinary excellence. You do have to order meals in advance, I believe. The hosts will provide you with a thermos of hot water to use in your room during the day.

How to drive there:
So when hiring a car, follow instructions to drive along the cost road and if coming from Nadi, you go around 6km further along the main road after passing the large Intercontinental Resort sign, then you will see the Namuka Lodge sign.

Turn right off the main road towards the sea, (unsealed road) drive 1 km to a Y junction where you keep on the left.
Then at 2.4 km from the main road you come to a large sign for the Lodge which says: “turn left 3km straight on”. Swing to the left, go straight through minor intersections, keeping always on the main road along the ridge. It is narrow in parts but there are passing bays if you need one.
Then by the time you have driven 4.5 km from the main road you make a sharp descent down off the ridge to the coastal flat, and at any other Y junctions keep to the right. You arrive at the Lodge adjoining the beach, 6 km from the main road. Print this out before you leave home. If it is dark and rainy when you arrive it will be a help.

Driving into Nambuka resort can feel a little daunting for the 1st time. It's 6km of winding gravel road, off the main highway, through beautiful farmland and hills. Cresting the final hill, the sparkling ocean reveals itself, with quaint villas on its door step.
It's a fijian family run resort, all food is freshly prepared, from the market, ocean or farm.
Service is remarkable, any need responded to by the smiling Ole or Simi.
A must try is the fresh lobster, caught from the reef and prepared and served as a traditional Fijian curry. I'll return just for that dish, it was amazing.
The villas are comfortable, quiet with individual porches overlooking the incredible ocean vista. The shower is separated by glass doors, with the roof open to the sky, lovely showering under the stars. The sea breeze was a constant gentle factor coming through the balcony screen doors. All windows are screened and overhead fans made the stay very comfortable.
The snorkeling directly in front of your villa is breathtaking, vibrant fish, blue starfish, gossamer corals. It's very much untouched compared to other parts of the reef I snorkelled on the coral coast.
Simple delicous food with very reasonable prices, kind customer focused service and a abundance of natural beauty I recommend Numbuka lagoon bay resort.
Be comfortable and almost off grid with no television, or pool and there is mobile internet coverage all the time, but with wireless from 6pm.each night.

The resort is really hart to reach. We had an SUV and it was quite tough and a long way from the beach.
The rooms are old but clean. The beach is very cool and the view awesome.
I cannot really recommend the food.
Negative point is: they try to charge you for everything... breathing the air should be for free.
All in all it is just ok

We just loved it there because it was really quiet and the beach was so nice. You can actually relax and enjoy nature. The staff was so nice, they always put a smile on our face. They also showed us how to cook a traditional Fijian dinner which was really yummy. Namuka Bay is just a beautiful place and we would definitely recommend it.
