Great location, but needs improvements...

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 2 Mar 2019via mobile
This place is conflicting for us. There is extensive social space - a pool, a terrace, a pool side bar, a game area, tv area, multiple lounge areas. All have tired looking furniture throughout it. The room and bathroom are very tired and shaggy, not in the best condition. The walls are dirty and the paint is peeling everywhere. The towels are dishcloth thin, cannot be called white, and are torn with straggly edges and there are holes throughout them. There was food left throughout the shared kitchen (half eaten sandwich, lemons, garbage), and smelly spills in the shared fridge. The WiFi does not work in the rooms unless you are near the front desk. However, the staff is very welcoming and accommodating. Location is great as we were minutes walk from main areas. The breakfast was simple but good.

Dear Guest,

We appreciatte your comments and suggestions. We have been improving many things in the hostel lately. We do not agree with what has been said regarding the furniture since from the beginning of this year it has been changed and / or reupholstered. The same happens with our bedding and towels. The situation of the kitchen often has to do with the same guests who stay and leave things. We have a protocol to throw what is not marked some specific days in the week, however, sometimes when we have thrown things in the trash some guests have claimed us for throwing their food. It is a difficult situation to cope with and it needs empathy from the rest of the guests to understand it and not to criticize it lightly. The wi fi service has improved a lot since we have finally achieved a new technology to be able to have a better connection, however, the company providing the service is still making some adjustments, which we hope will improve the service even more. There are 3 signs in the hostel and they really cover the whole building, not just the front desk area.

Regards,

I think the best part about this Hostel is the location. The. Rooms are average. The floors are very old wooden floors in need of a lot of attention. If you stayed on the main floor you could hear all those staying above you. The kitchen fridge needs cleaning out once every in a while. People come and go and leave food that is left behind and never cleaned out.

Room tip: Main floor with private bathrooms

Dear Kerry,

Thanks for your comment, however, we´d like to clarify some negative points mentioned here. This a colonial house built in 1910. Apart from being renovated for us to convert it in a hostel, there places that are part of the architecture itself and difficult to handle, like the wooden floors for example. Nevertheless, we are actually working on an improvement for these. Rooms are very spacius, well decorated and with high ceilings, never categorized as average. The guests kitchen fridges are cleaning twice a week to through away things that guests leave in fact. You didn´t stay enough to freely say that they (because we have 2 and I don´t know if you just took a look at 1 of them) were never cleaned out. And also you should understand that there is a share of responsibility of the passengers themselves who do not care about throwing away the things that they leave in bad condition or that they will not use once they finish their trip.

Kind regards,

Hostel is very well run, friendly and welcoming. Rooms are spectacular. Centrally located, close to the city centre. First place to stay in Santiago every time. Great facilities and happy hour cocktails. What’s not to like?

My partner immediately thought the title of this Hostel was an euphemism for a brothel, but it was just a backpacker's hostel. Perhaps a changed name would be a better way forward. The building itself is a colourful old style colonial building with high ceilings and big doors. The rooms were adequate for a hostel. The beds were comfortable. The amenities were also good with spacious lounges, an outside area with a big pool and a bar. Breakfast was poor though, with little choice to eat.

Dear Robert,

Thanks a lot for your evaluation and comments. We are glad to knwo you´ve enjoyed the stay at our property. We only don´t undertand why you said the bkf is poor. Our bkf is a buffet service with a lot of options and always one of the stronger points evaluated for all our customers.

Building:
A super-nice old villa with a big patio and a clean pool. The building itself is very charming and you notice it as soon as you enter.

Service:
This on the other hand was really a weak point, which is a pity cause it lowers the whole experience. I can mention some examples:
We had to leave early one morning and therefore I asked for an early breakfast (which was refused) or at least some butter an jam since we had already bought bread before - but obviously not even that was possible...
The Wi-Fi was pretty weak, so weak that I had to use my cellphone to upload my travel-pics on OneDrive. When I mentioned it at the reception, nothing happened altough I could explain the problem pretty exactly (which router didn't work at all, which one just temporarely, etc.)

In the end it's the little things: A tiny little bit more attention to your guest's wishes and needs and everything would have been just perfect (and five stars)

Dear Guest,

Unfortunately we are not able to prepare early bkf to all our guests, especially when they are leaving too early like in your case. We have set up a buffet bkf which must be attended by some staff members. It´s crazy to think we can make some staff members to come to prepare the bkf at 4-5 or 6 am for 2 people. We sometimes arrange it but when it´s about a large group of people and when we are also told in advance about this situation, not the day before. This regulation has been informed in all the booking engines we work with for you to check it before even making the reservation and during the check in process as well. It´s unfair to push a situation that has been informed in advance and use it to leave a regular evaluation about our property.

Regarding to the internet connection, after 3-4 years making pressure on the only company that brings the service to our area, we have achieved to have a new tecnology (optical fiber) which is going to improve the whole service. To be fair, we´ve been having problems with the wi fi for ages, but it´s not a matter of money because we were always willing to pay for the faster service, but we didn´t have any option to get it.

Regards,

We recently stayed here for two nights and found the hostel to be very run down and noisy. The building itself is beautiful but needs some upkeep to raise the standard. The staff were quite helpful but the advertised happy hour did not occur perhaps due to staff shortages - it wasn’t explained when we asked. The bathrooms really need repair - it was rare that the toilet could be held closed with the lock and there was a definitely lack of privacy. The pool area is great and welcome after a hot day of walking. The location was good with access to public transport and restaurants but I could not recommend staying here.

Dear Guest,

We know that your comment has been motivated by not opening the bar for you and your partner. We told you that there was a problem specifically that day to open the bar (something unusual) and that you were very welcome to buy what you needed outside of the hostel and bring it in without problems. Unfortunately the other points described do not reflect the reality of what we offer and we reiterate that they are motivated by a reason that is not really important to disqualify everything else.
