THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE WATERFRONT'S KITCHEN CAFE, WHICH SEEMS TO HAVE NO SEPARATE LISTING HERE ON TRIPADVISOR
I dined here several times, there not being a huge choice in Stanley. On the first occasion I reserved in advance and was seated on the ‘high’ table with a nice view over the harbour. Excellent pinot grigio and dip starter (non-bland hummus, cumin-flavoured but not too smokey baba ghanouj and guacamole with tasty tortilla chips and pita), but a disappointing main course of oily pasta laced with overcooked veggies and a barely dressed side salad, which in the end filled me up to the point of not wanting a dessert. On the second visit I had the (vegetarian) wild-mushroom arancinis in arrabiata sauce, with a side of gratinated spinach, followed by cheese and biscuits. My third dinner was of baked breaded toothfish (Chilean Sea bass, South Atlantic equivalent of cod), served with buttered steamed potatoes and other veg, with hollandaise sauce. The dish was delicious but very rich – a more tart accompanying sauce than the hollandaise would have worked better. For lunch on my last day in Stanley I had their vegetarian frittata: satisfactory though nothing special. On the first evening the waiter had said that the restaurant would be quiet midweek and there was no need to reserve; but in the event it was full the next time I went and I had to wait for a table. Stanley is not the gastronomic capital of the universe, so this is about as good as it gets. And it does deserve extra points for the view and ambiance.
