Afternoon Tea visit, slightly disappointing

Review of Darwin House
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Nov 2019
After hearing good reviews about the afternoon tea at Darwin House, we booked and attended in November 2019. We were welcomed by the owners and their lovely dog. Unfortunately, the afternoon tea did not live up to expectations. It equated to 4 small triangle sandwiches, 2 small plain cupcakes, 1 small coconut biscuit (which was nice), 1 small plain biscuit and a small square of fruit cake. The tea was nice and we were offered more once the pot was empty. The price is also stated at £7.95 on their website but on the day we were charged £9.75.

Lovely house, lovely people, but I felt the afternoon tea was below par and slightly overpriced.

I sit writing this review, in the conservatory of Darwin House Lodge with a chilled glass of wine, & the beautiful view. This is our third & final day here & I shall be very sad to leave tomorrow morning. We arrived to a friendly welcome & Labrador cuddles. We have room six which is beautiful with a spa bath & views in three different directions- all over the water. The bed is comfortable & we have had some of the best night's sleep in a very long time.
The lounge & conservatory are inviting & comfortable. We were able to enjoy a huge (freshly cooked) Full English breakfast whilst watching the Rugby World Cup semi finals & had free access to the TV & DVD's, had we have wanted to tear ourselves away from the views. The home cooked meals are wonderful & you certainly won't go hungry!
It's lambing season here so we have enjoyed watching the beautiful lambs wonder around the grounds & there is plenty of other wildlife to see.
The only way I can describe the owners is; wonderful! They have made this a home from home & can't do enough to help us- with 3 children at home, I can't remember the last time I felt so chilled out!
In short, we shall be returning VERY soon!

Room tip: All rooms have great views in varied directions but room 6 has 3 different directions, all over-looking the water. It also has a spa bath.

Stopped here for lunch on Wayne's Tour - Very friendly and nice to have Home made soup and home made fresh sandwiches which was all excellent - Didn't stay here but i would imagine from everything i saw and witnessed it would be a good place to stay.

I had a night in Darwin House for the third time. While the facilities in the house remained substantially the same, the lodge management and main workers had changed a lot and that made quite a difference to me. I went to New Heavens to view the gentoo penguins for a third year at an extra charge for the rides from and to the house, which was expensive from the Falklands standard. The cost was fine for me as I had been used to it anyway, but what I was disappointed was that the stay at New Heaven was much longer than my past 2 years' since 4 other guests joining the excursion preferred to stay much longer despite the very windy weather in the afternoon. I had no choice other than taking the driver's key and walked a long way back to the jeep for shelter until the last guest told the driver he or she was ready to leave. This had been the only occasion at Darwin for me where the driver did not watch the clock and manage the time fairly among all guests for such excursion. I was very surprised since I happened to be the one who had the most adequate gear for such a windy and cloudy afternoon out there. To be fair to the lodge, the clean living conditions, the addition of a bed to some family/double rooms and the adequate food and hot drinks for breakfast, tea and dinner and the low room rates remained the pros there. The new chef was a gentleman who did have a heart for cookery. The collection of souvenirs available in the lodge remained more or less the same as what I had seen before, and that appears to suggest that most guests were local Falklanders to whom souvenirs might be commonplace items.

Room tip: Choose the direction you prefer, eg whether you want to see pink to orange clouds for sunset from your windows.

This is a great place to stay to explore the area around Goose Green, with its battlefields and memorials. The rooms are very comfortable, the food is good and comes in huge quantities, and the lounge has great views.

The hosts, Anton and Dolly, are very friendly and happy to arrange tours of the area, meet you off the FIGAS plane and so on.

Highly recommended

This is probably the best location outside Stanley from which to see the south of East Falkland. We had three days in Darwin before flying to Port Howard by Islander (10 seats)
The settlement itself is very old and has great views over the bay to what was the old farm sheering shed.
It is less than 10 minuets from the old settlement of Goose Green, with all its farming, port and 1982 history.
It is virtually in the centre of the 82 battlefield.
The airfield is just off the house drive & Anton & Dolly the hosts, are the, Fire Crew, the Met Office, and the Ground Crew, so no chance that one could miss a flight.
Darwin is also well placed for the British War Cemetery at San Carlos the ferry to West Falkland, and the old suspension bridge.
Anton cooked us a mean Patagonian Tooth Fish. So we now have no need to go, "Up West" for such exotic cuisine.

Room tip: All the rooms have great views over the bay.
