The coolest thing about this property is that it’s the *original* Shangri-La Hotel, built back in 1971, and has this unique feeling of moderately-aged luxury. While it’s had some updates and expansions, the resort still features some artwork and the same marble pillars in the lobby that have been in place since the hotel’s first days.
It’s located in the centre of the city, but the hotel surrounds the pool in such a way that you feel like you’re tucked away in a hidden oasis, shielded from the busy streets, and surrounded instead by lush foliage and flowers - specifically, orchids; hundreds of strains of orchids that are bred in the hotel’s own orchid greenhouse that grows over 600 orchid varieties. In other words, the location is as central as it gets, yet you completely forget that you’re in the middle of a cosmopolitan city the second you enter the property.
As you’d expect from a hotel of this calibre, all restaurants are very good here, as is the 3pm tea in the lobby which I’d highly recommend. Hotel staff is kind and genuine and upholds the Shangri-La’s reputation of providing complete white-glove service. Again, it’s not the most modern hotel in Singapore, and there are other places that offer a more sleek and modern vibe - but for anyone who’s interested in experiencing high-end luxury circa 45 years ago, it’ll be a rewarding experience.More
