This river is a tributary river of Yangtze River, 110km long, runs through central Nanjing. The scenic belt along the river develops with the Confucius Temple at the center. Small shops, stores, restaurants and bars cluster the area. One can find everything here ranging from colourful trinkets to local specialities. At night the whole area is lit up with colourful lights thus creating a very impressive night scenario. We board a colourfully decorated boat and the ride on this ancient river was a memorable experience.

Been very surprised about this kind of activity, first time I found it after several year visiting Nanjing. I enjoy it very much.

Absolutely heaving with local tourists at peak times, which spoils the atmosphere. Better during the day time when it’s quieter, nice views of the river but that’s about it. Mostly just shiny new shops and Chinese tourists looking to flaunt new money.

Qin Huai River is the biggest branch of Yangtze River in Nanjing. Many litterateurs and poets in Chinese history gave their beautiful words on it.

Unfortunately, the river has lost its old elegance and beauty. There are only crowded people, tourist boats, and rebuilt, fake old buildings. In the evening, all the boats, buildings and bridges were light up. Seems beautiful, but just artificial.

Quite a pity to see it become a superficial tourist attraction.

I went there in November. It is indeed the best month to go. Remember that Nanjing has a reputation that it is one of the furnace of the nation.

The Qin Huai River was famous for its contraditions. One one side, it was the place where scholars studied hard for their exams. There was even a temple dedicated to Confuscius. Right opposite, it was where the famous recreational chambers were. Famous pretty ladies lived and worked there.

This led to the famous saying: Cross the bridge, and you are not a gentleman anymore.

I crossed the bridge with my better half some 800 years late. I did not enjoy it. There were too many people and too many shops selling souvenirs. The river is really very narrow. There are cruises but there was nothing to see, especially at night.

Please go there, but once is enough.
